Fresno Suffers Crushing Walkoff Loss To El Paso

July 3, 2015 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Fresno Grizzlies News Release

EL PASO, Texas - Right-handed reliever Jose Veras couldn't record an out in the bottom of the ninth as the El Paso Chihuahuas (40-40) scored three runs to grab a 6-5 come-from-behind walk-off victory over the Fresno Grizzlies (46-35) Thursday night at Southwest University Park. Cody Decker led off the ninth with a walk, moved to second on a single by Rymer Liriano and scored on a single by Jason Hagerty. After a walk to Jake Goebbert loaded the bases, Rocky Gale hit a comebacker that ricocheted off Veras for an infield single that allowed the game-tying run to score. With the bases loaded and still nobody out, Veras fell behind 3-0 to Benji Gonzalez and eventually allowed a game-ending line drive that dropped into right field. The loss was only Fresno's second this season when leading after eight innings.

Fresno positioned themselves for the win when they put across four runs in the fifth to go ahead 5-2. L.J. Hoes poked a game-tying sacrifice fly to deep center and then Robbie Grossman followed with a three-run homer (2) over the center field wall.

Mark Appel rebounded from his first start to limit El Paso to three runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings. He worked out of a no outs bases load jam in the first, stranded a leadoff triple in the third, left runners on second and third in the fourth and worked a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. The damage against him came when Jake Goebbert struck for a two-run homer in the second and Benji Gonzalez knocked a sixth-inning RBI double.

Fresno missed out on some opportunities to add runs along the way. Tyler White and Max Stassi were both thrown out at home in the second on an unusual 5-2-4-2 double play, which came about when Tony Kemp hit a grounder to third that caught White in between third and home. He was tagged out and then catcher Rocky Gale threw to second to try and get the advancing Kemp, but Casey McElroy threw back to Gale, who tagged out Stassi attempting to score.

Another missed opportunity came in the fourth when Robbie Grossman walked and advanced to third on a double from Jonathan Villar, but White and Stassi struck out looking, and then Joe Sclafani popped out to second to end the inning.

Fresno will attempt to rebound and grab a series victory tomorrow night when they play the series finale, which also marks their final regular season game in El Paso this year. Asher Wojciechowski takes the hill for Fresno and faces righty Colin Rea, who will be making his Triple-A debut.
