Late Inning Miscues Cost Chasers in 6-3 Loss

OMAHA, Neb. - Leading 3-2 entering the seventh inning, the Omaha Storm Chasers (37-48) gave up four runs over the next two frames to the New Orleans Zephyrs (42-44) despite allowing only one hit in the two innings combined as they dropped the second game of the series 6-3. The Chasers were unable to win a third consecutive game at home, a feat they have failed to do on six occasions this season.
Top Royals prospect Yordano Ventura allowed only two runs on three hits through his first six innings of work, but he entered the seventh inning or later for only the third time at the Double-A level or higher and loaded the bases on two hit by pitches and an error by catcher Manny Pina. Left-hander Buddy Baumann entered the game in a tough bases loaded and nobody out situation and walked the tying run home and then allowed the game-winning runs to score on a two-run single by rightfielder Bryan Peterson. Ventura has now allowed one run in three of his first six Triple-A outings, but five or more runs in his other three appearances.
The Storm Chasers had the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth as they loaded the bases with two outs for Irving Falu, but he flew out to left field to end the final threat. The Storm Chasers were 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position, and were held scoreless in eight of the nine innings in the game. Christian Colon accounted for two of the three Omaha runs on the night, and has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games (.333, 15-for-45).
Omaha pitchers have allowed just nine hits in 21 total innings in the first two games of the series, but the Chasers offense has only managed to score five runs on their 23 hits. In their first ten games against the Zephyrs this season, the Storm Chasers have only won three.
The three-game series ends tomorrow with Omaha sending out left-hander Justin Marks (1-9, 7.04 ERA), who has taken the loss in seven consecutive starts. Marks will face off with New Orleans right-hander Doug Mathis (3-6, 3.78 ERA) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
