Round Rock Express News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A four-run sixth and five-run seventh gave the Nashville Sounds (31-56) a late nine-run lead that sank the Round Rock Expresss (49-38) in the series finale at Greer Stadium Tuesday night 10-1.
The Round Rock lineup managed just three hits throughout the night off Nashville starter Jimmy Nelson as the E-Train concluded a three-game road trip with a loss to the Sounds.
Express starter Brad Mills was stifling for five innings Tuesday night, allowing just a leadoff home run to Sounds second baseman Scooter Gennett in the first inning until his outing unraveled in the sixth.
Tied at 1-1 after right fielder Jared Hoying knocked in the tying run for the Express on a RBI single in the fifth, the Sounds offense turned the tables on Mills. With a runner on first and two outs, a double off the bat of left fielder Khris Davis and a walk to catcher Blake Lalli loaded the bases for Nashville. One swing of the bat cashed in all three runners as right fielder Caleb Gindl cleared the bases with a three-run double to put Nashville in the lead, 4-1. Another single by center fielder Josh Prince plated Gindl for the fourth run of the inning and chased Mills from the game.
For the second straight start, Mills was tagged with five or more runs after holding opponents to four or fewer runs in 12 of his first 13 starts. The southpaw also suffered the loss, his third over his last five starts.
Reliever Ryan Rodebaugh took over for Mills in the sixth and finished off the frame but did not fare as well in the seventh. The Sounds scored five more runs off Rodebaugh, using a RBI single from designated hitter Robinzon Diaz and back-to-back homers off the bats of first baseman Hunter Morris, a three-run shot, and Davis to take a nine-run lead after seven innings.
The Express offense went quietly over the final two frames, working just one walk in the eighth as the Sounds bullpen held Round Rock in check to preserve the series clinching victory.
Round Rock opens a seven-game homestand Thursday night with a 7:05 p.m. start against the Omaha Storm Chasers at Dell Diamond. Along with the Original Thirsty Thursday, presented by Firetrol Protection Systems which will feature $1.00 sodas and discounted draft beers, Thursday night will also begin Red, White and Blue Weekend with a post-game fireworks extravaganza, presented by CORT Furniture.
