Brock Peterson Hits Game-Winner in Redbirds' 6-5 Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Brock Peterson hit an RBI single to score Kolten Wong in the top of the ninth inning to give the Memphis Redbirds a 6-5 win over the Iowa Cubs in front of 14,186 fans at Principal Park on Wednesday.

Wong led off the ninth with base hit off Brian Schlitter (0-1), moved to second on Chad Huffman's first sacrifice bunt of the season, and scored as Peterson singled down the first base line to record Memphis' seventh last at-bat win.

The Redbirds (41-46) avoided a three-game series sweep by the Cubs while snapping a five-game losing streak. The club trails Iowa by three games in the PCL American Northern Division.

Peterson (3-for-5) also doubled and drove in two runs. Outfielder Tommy Pham added three hits, two RBIs, one run scored, and a stolen base.

Memphis jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the three innings as Pham led off the ballgame with a single to center. He moved to second on a groundout and scored as Peterson singled to left. Consecutive doubles from Peterson and Jermaine Curtis pushed the Memphis lead to 3-0.

Iowa struck back with five straight unanswered as Brad Nelson, Junior Lake, and Ty Wright hit back-to-back-to-back home runs off Boone Whiting in the fourth. It marked the first time since 1999 that the Cubs hit three home runs in a row.

The Cubs went ahead at 5-3 in the next frame when Jae-Hoon Ha went yard with a runner aboard.

The Redbirds tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth after loading the bases on singles from Adron Chambers, Rob Johnson, and Greg Garcia. Pham followed by ripping a game-tying, two-run single to right.

Whiting gave up a career-high four home runs to account for five runs in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked one in the no-decision. Whiting had allowed just one home run in his first 45 1/3 Triple-A innings coming into the game.

Nick Greenwood followed in relief of Whiting with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Marc Rzepczynski (1-2) worked two shutout frames for the win before Fernando Salas collected his first save.

The Redbirds return home to AutoZone Park on Independence Day for a seven-game homestand with the division-rivals Nashville Sounds (Triple-A Brewers) and Omaha Storm Chasers (Triple-A Royals). Right-hander Scott McGregor (2-4, 6.03) will face Sounds left-hander and former Redbird Chris Narveson (1-4, 6.83) at 6:05 pm CT at AutoZone Park. Gates open at 5:00 pm.
