Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Akron, OH - Preston Palmeiro's RBI single led the Baysox to a 6-5, ten inning victory over the Akron RubberDucks Friday night. The win was Bowie's sixth in a row, and fifth in its last six games against Akron.
The Baysox got off to a quick start, scoring in the top of the first inning. After Cedric Mullins doubled and stole third base, Carlos Perez hit an RBI single to put Bowie up 1-0.
Akron responded immediately, with a five singles in the bottom of the first inning that brought in three runs. Connor Marabell, Alex Call and Nellie Rodriguez each had RBIs in the inning.
The game remained 3-1 Akron until the top of the fourth inning. In that frame, Jesmuel Valentin was hit by a pitch, and Palmeiro walked to put two on base for Mason McCoy. The Eastern League's leading hitting then doubled into the gap in right center field to score Valentin. Mullins followed with a base hit of his own, scoring Palmeiro and tying the game at 3-3.
The score would stay even until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the RubberDucks took the lead. With two outs, Alex Call singled. He then attempted to steal second base. The throw to second hit off Call and bounded into right field. Call got up and took off for third, and the throw there bounced into the Akron dugout, allowing him to score and give the RubberDucks a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the ninth, the Baysox would answer with a two-out rally of their own. Rylan Bannon doubled off the fence in left field, and on the next pitch, Valentin hit a go-ahead two-run home run to put Bowie ahead 5-4.
Akron would not go away, as they tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Ernie Clement, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, Willy Yahn advanced to third base on a wild pitch after being placed on second to begin the inning. Palmeiro then hit a single through the drawn in RubberDucks infield to put the Baysox back on top.
Luis Gonzalez pitched a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning to secure the 6-5 win for Bowie. The third game of the series in Akron is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday night. Dean Kremer will start for Bowie against Akron hurler Adam Scott.
