Hartford Yard Goats News Release
HARTFORD - New Hampshire's Kevin Smith slugged two home runs and closer Danny Young survived a ninth-inning comeback bid, as the Hartford Yard Goats dropped a 4-2 decision to the Fisher Cats Friday night, before a capacity crowd of 6,850, the 11th capacity crowd of the season. The Yard Goats have sold out 25 games in 41 dates at Dunkin' Donuts Park and have a season's attendance of 240,195, ahead of last season's record-setting pace. New Hampshire (9-13) has won the first two games of the series against Hartford (9-12).
Young recorded his second save in an interesting ninth inning. After striking out the first two batters, the southpaw surrendered a double to Mylz Jones. A walk and wild pitch placed the tying runs in scoring position, before he struck out Manny Melendez to end the game.
One night after slugging four homers, New Hampshire used its firepower to take the lead. Riley Adams belted a home run to the upper deck in right off of starter Jack Wynkoop. Chad Spanberger followed with a single and Smith launched a two-run homer to right. Hartford came back in its half of the second on a lead off home run by Alan Trejo, the mid-season All-Star's 12th homer. The Fisher Cats tacked on a run in the fourth on Smith's second home run of the game and 10th of the year. Neither club scored the rest of the way.
Wynkoop, the Eastern League's reigning "Pitcher of the Week," hurled seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits. He struck out five, as his record dropped to 6-10. New Hampshire starter Yennsy Diaz improved to 8-6, with five innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two. Three relievers finished up for the Fisher Cats.
Colton Welker and Jones each had a double and single, while Bret Boswell added two two hits to pace Hartford's nine-hit attack. Smith had two home runs and three RBI to lead New Hampshire.
Game three of the four-game series is Saturday at 6:05 p.m. RHP Brandon Gold will pitch for Hartford and RHP Patrick Murphy will draw the starting assignment for New Hampshire. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410 AM, on 100.9 FM, in Spanish on 1120 AM and on the Internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com and on MiLB.com. Saturday night the Whalers Alumni Weekend, presented by UConn Health, continues. Several former Whalers players and the former "Voice of the Hartford Whalers," Chuck Kaiton will be at Dunkin' Donuts Park throughout the weekend. A fireworks display follows Saturday night's game.
