Late Hogs Tally Snaps Flames Unbeated Streak

December 5, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Abbotsford Heat News Release

A late Flames comeback fell short on Friday night vs. Rockford. The Hogs collected the victory thanks to a late tally by J.C. Sawyer and snapped the Flames unbeaten streak at six games (3-0-2-1). Kyle Greentree and Adam Cracknell scored for Quad City in the loss.

The Hogs scored the only goal of the opening period when Mike Radja riffled home his fifth goal in eight games as a hockey. Radja captured a feed from Pete MacArthur and sent home a shot from the slot to put the Hogs in front. The Flames outshot Rockford 8-6 in the first frame but could not beat Hogs netminder Antti Niemi.

The teams traded second period markers that were separated by just 57 seconds. Dan Bertram gave the Hogs a 2-0 edge when he jammed a centering feed from Bryan Bickell past Flames netminder Leland Irving. The Flames answered less than a minute later when Kyle Greentree converted on a power-play chance for his 10th goal of the year. Greentree scooped up the rebound from an Anders Eriksson shot and beat Niemi for the Flames first goal of the night. The pair of quick tallies set the score at 2-1 after two in favor of the Hogs.

A dramatic third period finished with the Flames one goal short of extending their unbeaten streak to seven games. Adam Cracknell scored the period's first goal when he collected a wayward puck in the Rockford crease and netted his fourth goal of the year. Cam Cunning dumped the puck into the Hogs zone and Niemi left his crease to play the biscuit. The puck eluded the Hogs netminder and rolled into the Rockford crease before Cracknell swatted it home. The tally tied the game at two. The Hogs netted the game winner with just 3:31 left in regulation. Danny Groulx found J.D. Sawyer, who was lurking at cross-ice post. Sawyer swatted the puck home during a delayed Flames penalty and earned the win for the Hogs.
