Carolina Calls Up Rats Defensemen Tim Conboy & Casey Borer

ALBANY, NY - The Albany River Rats announced today that the Carolina Hurricanes, their National Hockey League affiliate, have recalled defenseman Casey Borer and Tim Conboy and have assigned forward Pat Dwyer and defenseman Josef Melichar to Albany.

Borer, 23, joins the Hurricanes after scoring one goal, adding three assists (4 points) and accumulating 18 penalty minutes while playing in all 21 of the River Rats' games thus far this season. The Minneapolis, Minnesota, native played in 11 games with Carolina in 2007-08 and notched a goal and two assists (3 points) in his first season of NHL action. Borer (6'2", 205 lbs), has earned 23 points (7 goals, 16 assists) in 83 AHL regular-season games with Albany since turning professional at the end of the 2006-07 season. The Hurricanes drafted Borer in the third round, 69th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, and signed him to a two-year, entry-level contract after his four-year career at St. Cloud State University.

Conboy, 26, returns to Carolina after beginning his fifth full professional season with Albany where he serves as the River Rats' captain and ranks second on the team with 61 penalty minutes in 19 games played. The Farmington, Minnesota, native saw his first NHL action in 2007-08, earning five assists and totaling 60 penalty minutes in 19 games with the Hurricanes while splitting time as a forward and a defenseman. Conboy (6'2", 210 lbs) has scored 15 goals, earned 37 assists (52 points) and amassed 673 penalty minutes in 285 AHL regular-season games with Cleveland and Albany since turning professional in 2003-04 after two seasons at St. Cloud State University. The San Jose Sharks originally drafted Conboy in the seventh round, 217th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, and he signed with Carolina as a free agent on July 21, 2006.

Dwyer, 25, returns to Albany after his second stint in the NHL with Carolina this season. The Great Falls, Montana native played in five games for the ‘Canes during his most recent call up and has logged time in 12 NHL games this season and scored his first career NHL goal on November 28th at Philadelphia. One of Albany's assistant captains, Dwyer has five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in 11 games for the River Rats this season.

Melichar, 29, signed as a free agent with Carolina on July 2, 2008 and has played in 15 games for the ‘Canes this season and posted four assists and eight penalty minutes. The Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic native is a veteran of 325 career NHL games and has 44 points (7 goals, 37 assists) and 271 penalty minutes in his seven years in hockey's top league. Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round (71st overall) in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Melichar began his professional career in the American Hockey League with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and played in 146 AHL games over two seasons; he has not played in the AHL since the 2000-01 season.

Both Dwyer and Melichar are expected to be in the lineup Friday nigh, December 5th as the River Rats host the Norfolk Admirals for the second straight game at 7:00 pm at the Times Union Center. Albany will then hit the road two games this weekend in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Rochester.
