Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Pirates grabbed a point but could not prevail in a 3-2 shootout loss at the Springfield Falcons. Portland moved into a first-place tie with the Providence Bruins atop the Atlantic Division.

The Falcons struck first with a power play goal from Brian Lerg 5:32 into the opening period. Ryan Potulny and Theo Peckham picked up the assists. Portland would have a tough time mustering offense through the first two periods, directing just 10 shots in on Falcons goaltender Devan Dubnyk. Meanwhile, the Falcons peppered Jhonas Enroth who made 23 saves on 24 shots through two periods. With 20 minutes left, the Falcons had a 1-0 lead.

Nearing the midpoint of the third period, the Pirates were able to knot the game at one when Nathan Gerbe beat Dubnyk for his 14th goal of the season, his seventh on the power play. Gerbe's tally was assisted by Tim Kennedy and Chris Butler. The Falcons would come roaring back just over a minute and a half later when Derek Bekar scored his seventh of the season from Carl Corazzini and Tyler Spurgeon. Bekar found a loose puck in the slot off a rebound and beat Enroth high. The Pirates wouldn't go away though, and with 6:36 left to play, Felix Schutz skated down the left wing on a two-on-one with Marc-Andre Gragnani. Schutz dropped the puck to his backhand and spun a pass onto the tape of Gragnani. The defensemen made no mistake with a one-timer for his second goal of the season. Schutz got the lone assist.

In the overtime, both goaltenders stopped all of the shots they faced and the two teams went to a shootout. Only Nathan Gerbe was able to score in the shootout, as the Pirates fell by a final score of 3-2. Carl Corazzini had the game-winner in the shootout, while Viacheslav Trukhno and Ryan Potulny also scored.

Jhonas Enroth stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced, but took the loss. Devan Dubnyk stopped 28 of the 32 shots thrown his way to pick up the win.
