West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

Lansing, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps wasted a great pitching performance by starter Anthony Shawler Thursday night and fell to the Lansing Lugnuts 3-1 at Oldsmobile Park.

The Whitecaps jumped out in front in the first. After a single by Gustavo Nunez and a walk to Brent Wyatt, Nunez scored on an RBI single by Billy Nowlin.

The Lugnuts tied the game, 1-1, in the 6th on a sacrifice fly by Johermyn Chavez, then took the lead in the 8th. Two out walks to Kenny Wilson and Ryan Goins set the stage for back-to-back RBI singles by Mark Sobolweski and Chavez to make it 3-1.

The Whitecaps threatened in the 9th with runners at second and third when Frank Gailey got Angel Flores to fly out to end the game. Gailey picked up his first save for the Lugnuts. Jason Roenicke got the win in relief (2-5, 3.67). He went 3.1 innings in relief, giving up just one hit.

Anthony Shawler started and went 6 innings for the Whitecaps. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits, walked 2 and struck out 5. Brandon Hamilton took the loss (5-5, 6.89).

The Whitecaps open a 4-game home stand Friday night against Ft. Wayne. Former Tigers Willie Hernandez, Dave Rozema and Dan Petry will be on hand to help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Tigers '84 World Series Championship. Game time is 7:00pm at Fifth Third Ballpark.
