Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - Arizona Fall League Director Steve Cobb recently announced the organization and staff (managers, pitching coaches, hitting coaches, athletic trainers) for the Arizona Fall League's 2013 season that begins Tuesday, October 8.
Lake County Captains pitching coach Steve Karsay has been named the pitching coach of the Surprise Saguaros. The Saguaros, a name that represents a species of cactus, will consist of players from the Indians, Brewers, Orioles, Rangers and Red Sox. The team will be managed by Gary Kendall (Orioles) and the hitting coach will be Rich Gedman (Red Sox). Karsay will be honored during a Captains pre-game ceremony on Friday where he will be given his Arizona Fall League team cap.
The Indians will be represented on the Saguaros by former Captains players Tyler Naquin and Joey Wendle as well as Tony Wolters. Former Captains player Jake Lowery will play for the Peoria Javelinas.
Karsay, 41, is concluding his first season as Captains pitching coach after spending the 2012 season as the pitching coach of the Arizona League Indians, his first in the professional coaching ranks. Steve spent four seasons of his playing career in the Cleveland bullpen from 1998- 2001 where he was 15-14 with a 3.23 ERA in 164 games (4GS, 223.0IP, 210H, 80ER, 191K). Overall, he spent 11 seasons playing at the Major League level from 1993-2006 with Oakland, Cleveland, Atlanta, New York (AL) and Texas. He had signed a letter of intent to play at LSU prior to being drafted by Toronto in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1990 draft out of Christ the King High School in Queens, NY. During his career, Karsay was traded to Oakland in 1993 for Rickey Henderson and in 2001 to Atlanta for John Rocker.
The Arizona Fall League is regarded throughout professional baseball as the "finishing school" for top prospects since its inception in 1992. The six-team league features top prospects from every organization in Major League Baseball. The league plays three games per day six days a week (Monday-Saturday) in five Cactus League stadiums.
This year, Camelback Ranch-Glendale replaces Phoenix Municipal Stadium and two teams will play at Surprise Stadium during the renovation of the Peoria Sports Complex. Mesa Hohokam Stadium, Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, Scottsdale Stadium all return as venues. Daily start times are 12:35 p.m. and 6:35 p.m.
The eighth annual Fall Stars Game will be played Saturday, November 2 at Surprise Stadium. The league's championship contest will be played Saturday, November 16 at Scottsdale Stadium.
