Lansing Lugnuts News Release
EASTLAKE, Ohio - Dalton Pompey's tear continued on Wednesday night with a grand slam in the third inning that powered a six-run frame, allowing Kendall Graveman to earn his first professional win, as the Lansing Lugnuts (26-39, 58-76) pounded out an 11-2 win over the Lake County Captains (30-35, 53-79) at Classic Park.
After an error and an RBI infield single by Jason Leblebijian gave the Lugnuts an early 2-0 lead against Captains' starter Robbie Aviles (Loss, 4-5), Pompey came to the plate with the bases loaded and slugged his third home run in the last two games to propel the Lugs to a 6-0 edge.
Pompey owns two of Lansing's four grand slams this season; it was also the switch-hitter's first home run batting from the left side in 2013.
Kellen Sweeney's two-run single in the third inning stretched the lead to 8-1, then Pompey came around to score two more times on Dwight Smith, Jr.'s RBI single in the sixth and on Christian Lopes' two-run single in the seventh.
Pompey, who homered twice on Monday against Dayton and scored all five times he reached base, finished with a 3-for-5 performance in the game, adding a pair of doubles and scoring three runs. Over his last two contests, the 20-year old has scored all eight times he has reached base while also extending his current on-base streak to 15 consecutive games.
As a team, Lansing has scored 29 runs and notched 29 hits over their last two games.
The run-support allowed Graveman (Win, 1-3) to earn his first professional win since being drafted in the eighth round by the Toronto Blue Jays this season. The 22-year old pitched five strong innings, allowing just a single run on six Lake County hits. Graveman, drafted out of Mississippi State, did not issue a single walk while striking out three batters.
For Lake County, Aviles gave up eight runs - all earned - on eight Lansing hits, lasting just three innings in the loss. He struck out two and walked two as well.
The series continues on Thursday night, with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch scheduled. Ben White (8-8, 4.06) will start for Lansing in opposition of Lake County right-hander D.J. Brown (2-4, 2.79).
