Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars crushed the Kernels 9-1 on Wednesday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels were held to four hits in the loss.

Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Baker made a rehab start for the Chicago Cubs-affiliate Kane County. Baker (1-2) was excellent as he retired the first 13 Kernels hitters on his way to a win. He only allowed one hit in five innings of work. Adam Brett Walker reached on an infield single in the fifth inning, but Baker left after five shutout innings. He struck out two and walked none.

Jeimer Candelario gave Kane County a 3-0 lead in the third inning with a three-run home run to right field. The shot down the line came with two outs and was Candelario's 11th of the season.

Another home run in the fourth inning put the Cougars in front 5-0. Carlos Escobar hit a two-run shot to left field for his 4th home run of the season.

Jose Berrios (7-7) started and went five innings for the Kernels, allowing five runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three.

The Kernels had an excellent scoring chance in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with no outs, but they did not score after a strikeout and double-play ended the inning.

Kane County then quickly loaded the bases with no outs in their next at-bat and took advantage. They extended their lead to 7-0 in the seventh inning with back to back RBI singles by Wilson Contreras and Jose Dore.

The Kernels picked up their lone run in the eighth inning, cutting the Cougars lead to 7-1. The Kernels loaded the bases with one out on back to back walks and single. Then, Michael Quesada brought Jonathan Murphy in with a RBI fielder's choice.

Kane County pushed their lead to 9-1 in the ninth inning. A RBI sacrifice fly by Rock Shoulders scored Brad Zapenas. Jeimer Candelario doubled and later scored on a fielding error by Jorge Polanco.

Brandon Bixler pitched two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked three. Alex Muren also went two innings in relief. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit while striking out two and walking one.

Jose Arias went 2.2 innings in relief for Kane County, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out three and walked six. Stephen Perakslis went the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits.
