Midland, Mich.-Three Great Lakes pitchers combined to scatter six hits as the Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Wednesday night.

The Dragons fell to 35-30 in the second half. They now trail Great Lakes by three and one-half games in the race for the final Eastern Division playoff spot with five games to play. To reach the playoffs, the Dragons will need to win their final five games and hope the Loons go no better than 1-4 over their remaining games. The Dragons and Loons meet again on Thursday and Friday.

Great Lakes broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning. Aaron Miller's run-scoring single brought in one run, and James Baldwin belted a two-out, two-run home run to make it 3-0. Great Lakes added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Robbie Garvey to extend their lead to 4-0.

The Dragons had only two base runners over the first five innings but produced a run in the sixth. Zach Vincej walked with one out and went to second on a balk. With two outs, Jon Matthews singled to right to drive in Vincej and make it 4-1.

But the Dragons could not score again against the Great Lakes bullpen. They had two base runners over the final three innings, both on singles. Loons pitchers struck out 11 and walked only one in the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Jackson Stephens (3-6) suffered the loss. He worked five and two-thirds innings and allowed eight hits and four runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

The Dragons collected six hits. Beau Amaral had two singles. Joe Hudson had the only extra base hit, a lead-off double in the third.

The Dragons play at Great Lakes again on Thursday night. Sal Romano (7-10, 4.84) will start for Dayton against Great Lakes' Tom Anderson (3-0, 3.14). The series concludes on Friday before the Dragons open a three-game home series at Fifth Third Field on Saturday vs. South Bend.
