Koss Homers in Portland's 9-7 Comeback Victory

Manchester, New Hampshire - Christian Koss' three-run home run in the eighth inning boosted the Portland Sea Dogs (61-60, 31-21) to a comeback victory, 9-7 over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (52-69, 21-32) on Tuesday at Delta Dental Stadium.

Portland started the scoring in the top of the first inning against New Hampshire starting pitcher Adam Kloffenstein. David Hamilton led off with a walk and Wilyer Abreu singled, placing runners at the corners. One out later, Abreu advanced on a wild pitch, and Stephen Scott doubled to center, scoring both runners to give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead. Niko Kavadas kept the offense rolling with a base hit, scoring Scott, increasing Portland's lead to 3-0.

The Fisher Cats plated a run in the bottom of the first against Sea Dogs starter Kyle Hart. Davis Schneider led off with a walk. Zach Britton doubled to left, and a throwing error from Tyler Dearden allowed Schneider to score, making it a 3-1 game.

Two more runs came around to score for Portland in the top of the third inning with Kloffenstein still on the mound. Abreu walked, Christian Koss singled, and Scott walked to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Abreu to score, expanding the Sea Dogs lead to 4-1. Alex Binelas drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Koss, and making it a 5-1 game.

New Hampshire scored in five consecutive innings, beginning in the bottom of the third. Orelvis Martinez drove in Cam Eden with a base hit, trimming Portland's lead to 5-2. Zac Cook used a sacrifice fly to score Sebastian Espino in the fourth, cutting the lead down to 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, Will Roberston singled to score Britton, making it 5-4. Cook struck again in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a two-run homer to give the Fisher Cats the lead, 6-5. The Fisher Cats plated another run in the bottom of the seventh with Sea Dogs reliever Oddanier Mosqueda walking in a run to make it 7-5.

The Sea Dogs clawed back in the top of the eighth inning. Tyler Dearden walked and was replaced with Wil Dalton at second base after Elih Marrero singled. One out later, Abreu knocked in Dalton with an RBI single to right. Koss stepped in and unleashed a three-run homer to left, giving Portland a 9-7 lead. Jacob Wallace and Brett Kennedy pitched the final two innings, keeping the Sea Dogs ahead for a 9-7 win.

Rio Gomez (2-0, 5.00 ERA) recorded one out that was a strikeout in his second win of the year. Jol Concepcion (0-1, 13.50 ERA) tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering four runs on four hits, with one walk and one strikeout in his first loss of the season.

The Sea Dogs and Fisher Cats play the second game of a six-game series on Wednesday with a 7:05 PM first pitch at Delta Dental Stadium. Portland sends RHP Sterling Sharp (1-0, 2.12 ERA) to the mound against New Hampshire RHP Alejandro Melean (0-2, 4.19 ERA).
