Komets on Top at All-Star Break; Blaze Visit Friday

Fort Wayne, IN -- Th e Komets completed the first week of 2012 gaining four points and sole possession of first place in the CHL at the All-Star break improving to 22-9-1 for 45 points after 32 games. The Komets split the four games played 2-2-0. Entering week 13 the Komets are on top with 22 wins and 45 points, tied with Wichita for most goals at 117, and have surrendered the fewest goals at 85.

The Komets dropped the first two games of the week, 4-2 at Bloomington Tuesday and 3-2 at Dayton Friday. It was only the second time this season Fort Wayne has been winless in back-to-back games. The Komets rebounded with a 4-2 win at Dayton Saturday and a 4-3 overtime victory at Fort Wayne Sunday over the visiting Gems. Sunday's win was the first Fort Wayne overtime win since last season, March 2, when the K's prevailed over the visiting Evansville IceMen 4-3.

Leaders at the All-Star break -The Komets also own the CHL's best road record at 11-5-0 and have the most efficient power play at 25.5% (28/110). The Komets have two players among the top seven scorers in the league as Brett Smith ranks fifth with 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) and Bobby Chaumont ranks seventh with 39 points (14 goals, 25 assists). Netminder Nick Boucher leads with 19 wins and three shutouts. Jamie Milam leads CHL defensemen with 11 goals and 23 points.

Komet team leaders -Brett Smith continues to lead the Komets with 27 assists, 41 points and a plus-16. Smith and Bobby Chaumont lead with 14 goals each. Jamie Milan leads defensemen with 11 goals and 23 points.

Komet streaks -The Komets finished week 12 with two straight wins and center Colin Chaulk finished with a three-game point streak (1 goal, 2 assists). The Komets have had streaks this season of six games (11/19-12/3) and five games (12/23-12/31) and were undefeated in regulation eight straight games (7-0-1, 12/16-12/31).

Holding the lead -- the Komets continue unbeaten when taking the lead into the third period. The Komets are 19-0-0 when leading after the second period and 13-2-0 when leading after the first period. When scoring the first goal the Komets are 16-2-1 and when outshooting their opponents the Komets are 16-5-1.

Smith and Boucher join Stars -- The CHL will present the 2012 All-Star Game at Prescott Valley, Arizona Wednesday. The Arizona Sundogs will host the Stars at Tim's Toyota Center (4,810) at 8:30pm ET. Center Brett Smith and goaltender Nick Boucher will represent the Komets on the All-Star squad.

GAMES THIS WEEK

The Komets will skate three games in three nights starting Friday when the Bloomington Blaze visit for an 8pm faceoff. The Komets visit Evansville Saturday and then trip to Missouri for a Sunday night faceoff.

- Blaze visit Friday -- The Komets will get back into action Friday night at 8:00 when the Bloomington Blaze (11-20-2, 24 points) make their fourth of six scheduled appearances in Fort Wayne. The Komets lead the season series 3-2-0 with all three victories against the Blaze in Fort Wayne. Bloomington is also coming off three games in three nights against the same team as the Blaze were 1-2-0 against Evansville over the weekend prior to the All-Star break. Bloomington continues to work toward getting out of the CHL cellar and trails Arizona by two points. The Blaze are 5-5-0 in their last 10 games.

- Komets at Evansville Saturday -- The Komets will skate at the Ford Center in Evansville Saturday at 8:15pm ET. It's the fifth of seven trips to Evansville this year. The Komets lead the series 6-2-1 and are 3-1-0 at Evansville, winning the last three trips after dropping the first visit of the season. The IceMen (18-9-3, 39 points) are battling to get back on top in the Turner Conference and trail the Komets by six points. Evansville is riding a four-game point streak (3-0-1) and finished last week winning two out of three (2-0-1) games in three nights against Bloomington. The IceMen will host Tulsa Friday before welcoming the Komets Saturday.

- Komets face the Mavericks at Missouri Sunday -- The Komets will complete week 13 with a 7:15pm ET faceoff at the Independence Events Center (5,800) in Independence, Missouri Sunday. The Komets doubled-up the Mavericks with a 4-2 home win Dec. 29 and will complete the season series with their only visit of the year to Missouri Sunday. Turner Conference rival Missouri (16-13-3, 35 points) is battling for playoff position, trailing fourth-place Rapid City by two points. The Mavericks are 4-1-0 in their last five games after suffering a 6-1 loss at Quad City Sunday. Missouri will host Allen Friday and skate at Bloomington Saturday before hosting the Komets Sunday. The Mavericks have enjoyed crowds in excess of 5,000 at all home games this season except one and have had six sell-outs of 5,800 after 14 home games to date.

Friday night Marathon Nights -- Continuing this year, Friday nights are Marathon Nights at Komet home games. Fans can take advantage of buy-one-get-one-free ticket offers for any Friday night home game. Fill Up Cards are available at all participating Marathon stations.

INC Soundoff with the Komets Monday nights -- The Komets, I ndiana's News Center and title sponsor PHP present a live weekly televised sports program on Monday nights at 7:30 on WPTA TV 21 Alive. The half-hour show is televised live from Wrigley Field Bar and Grill each week with INC's Tommy Schoegler as host and will feature highlights, interviews and call-ins as Komet players and personnel serve as co-hosts.

TONIGHT, Jan. 9, center Colin Chaulk and defenseman Dave Starenky will be special guests.

60th Anniversary Komet Hockey on WOWO -- The Komets and WOWO Radio News-Talk 1190 AM have partnered once again for 2011-12. Broadcaster Bob Chase will call the action for his 59th consecutive season radio-rinkside. All games broadcast on radio, home and away, can be heard online at Xfinity KometCast.
