Tulsa Oilers News Release
Week In Review: With a few days off after returning from Rapid City last weekend, the Oilers continued their travels with stops at Missouri and Wichita. Friday against the Mavericks, bad bounces proved costly. Three of the four Missouri goals went into the net off of Oilers players. Tulsa tied the game at two early in the third period, but a pair of goals from Brandon Coccimiglio gave Missouri the cushion it needed to hold for a 4-3 win. The Mavs have now taken both meetings this season with the Oilers. Saturday in Wichita, the Oilers once again found themselves tied in the third period but the Thunder surged ahead with four unanswered goals for a 6-2 victory. The game featured four fights and a season-high 54 penalty minutes for the Oilers. The win gives Wichita a 5-4 edge in the season series with two games still to be played.
Forwards Respond After Long Layoff: Gerome Giudice and Jason Weeks were both back on the ice last Friday after lengthy absences from the lineup. Giudice, who spent the last two seasons playing in Italy, had been on injured reserve and out of action since November 13. Weeks appeared in seven games through the first two months of the season but hadn't suited up since December 4. It didn't take long for the forward duo to make a contribution. Late in the second period against the Mavericks, Weeks re-directed a Giudice pass into the net for his third goal of the season. The next night in Wichita, Giudice found Weeks again for a tally to tie the game early in the third period. Weeks is now +6 in the nine games he's played this season, and his four goals have come on just 16 shots. Giudice is +4 with four points in five games.
Bell Behind the Bench: Veteran Gord Bell filled in as Oilers coach for the last two games in the absence of Bruce Ramsay who took a leave of absence to attend to a family matter. Bell, who underwent season-ending knee surgery in December, played the first five games of the season for the Oilers and accounted for two assists. An Alberta native, Bell played two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers and two seasons with the Amarillo Gorillas before joining the Oilers in 2010. Bell is proving his hockey versatility this year, spending time as a player, coach, and color commentator on the Oilers broadcasts.
Erickson Gets The Call: Defenseman Sean Erickson became the first Oilers player of the season to be called up to the AHL. The Oklahoma City Barons, an affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers, were in need of Erickson's services during a recent three-game road trip. Erickson got his first taste of AHL action last Wednesday at Lake Erie where he finished with a +1 rating and 2 PIM in a 3-2 Barons victory. Prior to the call-up, Erickson had appeared in every game this season for Tulsa. With 22 points, the University of Connecticut product is still among the CHL leaders in defensive scoring.
On The Road Again...and Again...and Again: Beginning on December 30 in Rapid City, the Oilers began a 12-game stretch with 10 of those contests on the road. Tulsa finally returns home this Saturday to host Allen after dropping four in a row away from the BOK Center. The Oilers will head down to Allen next Monday, return home for a Tuesday date with Missouri, and then embark on a season-long five-game road trip. Over these 12-games, every single opponent the Oilers have faced or will face has a winning record.
Youth Jersey Night: Don't forget, this Saturday is Youth Jersey Night as the Oilers take on the Allen Americans at 7:35pm at the BOK Center. The first 500 kids (12 & under) through the door will receive a free Oilers jersey. Show up early because the jerseys will go fast!
