Charlotte Knights News Release
(NORFOLK, VA) - First baseman Craig Dedelow and right fielder Micker Adolfo both homered, but the Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of a six-game series against the Norfolk Tides by a score of 12-4 on Tuesday night from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA. The loss stopped Charlotte's win streak at two straight games.
The Tides jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first three innings of the game. LHP Kyle Kubat (7-4, 5.23) started for the Knights and was charged with the loss after he allowed five runs on six hits over just two innings pitched. Kubat allowed two runs in the third inning before being removed for RHP J.B. Olson. In all, the Knights used seven pitchers and walked 13 Norfolk batters.
Dedelow put the Knights on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run, his fourth of the season with the Knights in 19 games since his promotion from Double-A Birmingham. One inning later, designated hitter Xavier Fernández doubled home Charlotte's second run of the game.
In the top of the seventh inning, Adolfo hit his 13th home run of the season, a solo shot off Norfolk reliever Alex Wells. The Knights added a fourth and final run on Tuesday thanks to a sacrifice-fly RBI from center fielder Mark Payton in the seventh inning. The RBI was Payton's team-high 86th of the season.
Norfolk RHP Spenser Watkins (1-0, 2.84) started the game and earned the win after he allowed just one run on two hits over five innings pitched.
The Knights will continue the six-game road series against the Norfolk Tides (Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) from Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA on Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. from the home of the Tides. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
