The Red Wings slugged their way to a series opening victory Tuesday night, thanks to another Jake Alu long ball, which helped the Wings push past Lehigh Valley 5-3.

The Wings gave RHP Patrick Murphy (2-3) the start. He pitched 4.2 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits while fanning five and walking two.

In the bottom of the third, the Red Wings took a 5-0 lead courtesy of a solo shot from C Taylor Gushue and a grand slam from 3B Jake Alu, the first grand slam since 5/24 at Syracuse. With the blast, Alu now has five home runs in his last seven games.

The IronPigs answered with a run in the fourth inning and two runs in the seventh off a two-run homer to make the score 5-3.

The Wings called on LHP Alberto Baldonado to relieve in the fifth inning with men on first and second with two outs. He tossed 1.1 shutout innings and gave up only one hit. He also struck out two.

RHP Connor Sadzeck helped bridge the game to RHP Reed Garrett, who shut the door in the ninth, earning his second save of the season.

With his solo homer and a double, Gushue had six total bases on the night. CF Andrew Stevenson went 2-4 and collected his 40th multi-hit performance of the year.

The Wings will give RHP Joan Adon (1-2) the start Wednesday afternoon at 1:05pm as they look to take a 2-0 series lead against the IronPigs.
