Charlotte Knights News Release

(JACKSONVILLE, FL) -- The Charlotte Knights dropped Tuesday's rain-shortened opener against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by a score of 2-1 at 121 Financial Ballpark in Jacksonville, FL. The game was delayed in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs when the rain and wind intensified. After a 32-minute delay, the game was called due to the inclement weather.

RHP Cristian Mena (0-1, 3.60) , who was promoted to the Knights from Double-A Birmingham earlier in the day, made his Triple-A debut in Tuesday's opener. The 20-year-old allowed just two runs over five strong innings. He gave up just four hits and fanned three batters. Mena was saddled with the loss despite the strong effort in his debut. RHP Declan Cronin came on in relief of Mena in the sixth inning and got two outs before the game was delayed.

Right fielder Víctor Reyes provided the only offensive spark for the Knights on Tuesday. Reyes launched his team-leading 18th home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning. In all, the Knights combined to tally three hits in the opening game of the six-game series.

Charlotte led the Jumbo Shrimp by a score of 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning. The Jumbo Shrimp took a 2-1 lead thanks to a two-run RBI double from catcher Jorge Alfaro. LHP Daniel Castano (4-1, 4.01) earned the win after he pitched a complete game. He gave up just one run on three hits over six innings pitched.

The Knights will now have an off day on Wednesday due to Hurricane Idalia. The two teams are expected to continue the six-game series on Thursday night from Jacksonville, FL. The "Voice of the Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action. First pitch on Thursday is set for 7:05 p.m. from 121 Financial Ballpark.
