King's Hit Casts Spell on Loons

June 25, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

FT. WAYNE, IN - Tom King lifted a single over a drawn-in outfield with one out and the bases loaded to lift the Ft. Wayne Wizards to a 3-2, comeback victory over the Great Lakes Loons Monday Night at Memorial Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,745.

The loss spoiled the best start of the season for Loons' lefty Garrett White, who pitched six innings, allowing just one run.

Josh Bell clubbed a two-run homerun in the sixth inning - one of Bell's two hits in the ballgame - to give the Loons a 2-0 lead. Ft. Wayne cut the lead in half with a sixth-inning double by King.

In the eighth, Ft. Wayne tied the game on a run-scoring single by Cedric Hunter off reliever Matt Gomez de Segura. He continued on the mound in the ninth and surrendered a leadoff double to pinch hitter Michael Campbell. With the count 3-2, Gomez de Segura hit Jesus Lopez in the back. Catcher Matt Stocco followed with a bunt single to load the bases with none out.

Gomez de Segura struck out Javis Diaz for the first out, setting the stage for King's heroics.

King had three hits and 2 RBIs in the contest.

Catcher Carlos Santana tied a season high for the Loons with three stolen bases, his first three steals and first three steal attempts of the season.

The series' second game begins tomorrow evening at 7pm. Right-hander Arismendy Castillo will square off against righty Andy Underwood. The game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on 100.9 WYLZ or online at Loons.com.
