GENEVA, IL - Right-hander Scott Deal pitched the Kane County Cougars' first nine-inning complete game since 2005, Haas Pratt homered twice and five players had a multi-hit game as the Cougars pounded the Burlington Bees, 11-2, in front of 5,015 in the opener of a four-game series at Elfstrom Stadium.
Deal (4-5), whose previous career-high for innings pitched in a game was seven, allowed an unearned run in the second for a 1-0 Bees lead and then gave up his final tally in the seventh. The 20-year-old, who had several family members in the stands, scattered nine hits, walked none and struck out two during his fourth quality start in five outings.
Meanwhile the Cougars' offense exploded against Everett Teaford (3-7) and Jim Wladyka for a season-high 16 hits, two of which came from Pratt's homers, a two-run shot during a six-run fifth inning and a solo blast in the sixth. It's the first multi-homer game by a Cougar since June of last season when Anthony Recker did it -- against Burlington. Greg Dowling, who played with Teaford at Georgia Southern University, had a homer, three hits and two RBIs off his former college teammate while missing the cycle by a triple. Sammy Hernandez and Jermaine Mitchell also had three hits, and Alex Valdez homered as the Cougars broke open a 4-1 game in the in the fifth for a 10-1 count by the end of the frame.
The Cougars (2-3) and Bees (3-2) continue their four-game series Tuesday night at 6:30 CDT when Andrew Bailey (1-4) faces Mario Santiago (1-5).
