Rattlers Score Early, Often, Bury Chiefs

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs suffered their worst loss of the season in a 15-3 defeat to the visiting Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday night at O'Brien Field. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-3 in the second half and 33-41 overall.

The Timber Rattlers wasted no time in jumping on Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo after leadoff hitter Gavin Dickey homered to left center to put the Rattlers ahead 1-0. Carrillo retired the next three batters in order after the lead off homer.

The Chiefs answered back in the bottom half of the inning after Jim Adduci singled up the middle and advanced to second on a ground out by Josh Lansford. Russ Canzler blooped a single into right center to score Adduci and tie the game at one. Ryan Norwood doubled down the left field line to give the Chiefs runners on second and third but Justin Souza struck out Alfred Joseph to end the inning.

Wisconsin continued to hit Carrillo hard in the second inning after Kuo Hui Lo singled to start the inning. And Joe White doubled to the gap in right center to score Lo all the way from first base to make it 2-1. Carrillo struck out James McOwen for the first out of the inning, Leury Bonilla reached on an infield single to score White and make it 3-1. Dickey, who homered in the first, found the gap in right center for a triple to make it 5-1.

Peoria got a run back in the bottom of the second inning after Wellington Castillo led off with a single and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Samson. Ryne Malone hit a grounder to the first basemen White who did not field it cleanly and allowed Malone to reach and Castillo to score and make it 5-2.

The Rattlers extended their lead in the third inning against Carrillo. After Carlos Peguero and Lo both singled, McOwen came up with a two out RBI single to left to make score both Peguero and Lo and make it 7-2.

Peoria got another run back in the fourth inning after Castillo was hit by a pitch to lead off and Nate Samson singled to move Castillo to third. Camp reached on a fielder's choice that retired Samson but allowed Castillo score to make it 7-3.

Wisconsin got to Carrillo again in the fifth inning after Lo picked up his third single of the game to start the inning and came around to score on a two out double by Jair Fernandez to make it 8-3. Carrillo picked up Fernandez at second base to end the inning.

The Rattlers broke the game open in the sixth and seventh inning off Chiefs reliever Oscar Bernard. McOwen singled to start the inning and Dickey picked up his third hit of the game with a single. Juan Diaz picked up the third hit of the inning to score McOwen and made it 9-3. Dickey eventually scored on a wild pitch by Bernard to make it 10-3.

Wisconsin scored four runs for the second time in an inning in the seventh after Lo reached on an error by the shortstop and Bernard walked Joe White on four pitches. Fernandez picked his second double of the night to score Lo and make it 11-3. McOwen picked up his third hit, and fourth RBI of the game on a single that scored two more runs to make it 13-3. Donny Walters came on in relief and got Dickey to ground into a double play but a run still scored to make it 15-3. Carrillo surrendered eight runs over five innings of work to suffer his third loss of the year. Bernard pitched one inning and allowed six runs, four of which were earned but did not retire a batter in the seventh inning. Souza started the game and worked the first four innings but did not factor in the decision. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out one. Shawn Kelley picked up the win in two innings of scoreless relief while allowing two hits and striking out two.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Russ Canzler (LF) - Russ finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and drove in his 30th RBI of the season. He also extended his hitting streak to six games which ties a personal season high. He is 9-for-15 in the last five games.

Notes... The 15 runs scored was the most this season by an opponent...The 18 hits was also a season high for an opponent...The 10 hits allowed by Carrillo was a season high...The eight runs he allowed tied a season high... Canzler now has four straight multi hit games...Dickey finished a double shy of the cycle which has still never been done at O'Brien Field...Tuesday is free hot dogs and popcorn through the seventh inning with paid admission...
