West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - Brennan Boesch and Jeramy Laster hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the second inning as the Whitecaps overcame an early 2-0 deficit and went on to defeat Lansing, 5-4.

West Michigan has won seven games in a row for the tenth time in team history and for the first time since taking eight straight June 29-July 6, 2006. 5-0 is the second best start ever for the Whitecaps in a half. The ‘Caps opened the 2001 season with a 6-0 record.

Jonah Nickerson took advantage of two full weeks of rest between starts to earn his first victory since June 5. He threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts.

Lansing took the lead in the top of the second on a two-run single with two out by Jonathan Diaz.

West Michigan responded with a three run rally in the bottom of the inning. First the back-to-back home runs, then an RBI sacrifice fly by Audy Ciriaco.

Two more runs were added by the Whitecaps in the fourth. The first was on a double by James Skelton. Scott Sizemore drove a sacrifice fly to left that scored Skelton and the ‘Caps moved in front, 5-2.

Travis Snider blasted a two-run homer to center field in the eight of West Michigan reliever Zach Piccola, which cut the lead to 5-4.

Brett Jensen pitched the ninth to earn his 14th save.

Edward Rodriguez pitched four innings of shutout relief for the Lugnuts, following starter Nate Starner, who allowed all five West Michigan runs and suffered the loss.
