FREDERICK, Md. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell to the Frederick Keys 3-2 in a back-and-forth affair on Tuesday to open the series from Harry Grove Stadium.

After the Pelicans (38-62, 17-16) and the Keys (40-60, 11-20) played scoreless baseball through four and a half innings, the Keys found the scoreboard first in the bottom of the fifth when Patrick Dorrian scored on a Pelicans throwing error to make it 1-0.

The run fell unearned on Jack Patterson, who was handed a no-decision after throwing 4.1 innings. Including his time in South Bend, Patterson has now thrown 30.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

The Pelicans volleyed back in the top of the sixth inning. Carlos Sepulveda led off the inning with a walk, Cam Balego was hit by a pitch and Tyler Payne drew another free pass to load the bases. Grant Fennell, who went 2-for-3, then coaxed a walk to tie the game at 1-1. The next pitch, Aramis Ademan hit an RBI ground out to first, staking the Birds to a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the seventh, with two runners in scoring position and two outs, Manuel Rodriguez (L, 0-3) allowed a two-run, infield single to Frederick's Zach Jarrett to give the Keys the 3-2 lead.

Brenan Hanifee (W, 7-9) earned the win for the Keys with his six scoreless innings out of the bullpen while Diogenes Almengo took home his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Myrtle Beach will take on the Keys at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night in the second game of the three-game set. The Birds will send RHP Alexander Vargas (2-2, 3.71) to the hill, while Frederick will start LHP Cameron Bishop (0-8, 5.14 ERA). Coverage starts at 6:45 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast and the MiLB First Pitch and TuneIn Apps.

The 2019 season is the 21st season for the Pelicans franchise and fifth as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For tickets visit MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/tickets, call (843) 918-6000, or visit the Pelicans Box Office.
