FREDERICK, MD - A clutch hit from Zach Jarrett in the bottom of the seventh gave the Frederick Keys (11-20, 39-60) a 3-2 victory over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (17-16, 38-62) on Tuesday night at Nymeo Field. Trailing 2-1, Robbie Thorburn slapped a double down the left-field line to put runners at second and third. Jarrett then bounced a pitch down the line and beat out a long throw from third to bring home the tying and go-ahead run. Thorburn also tallied an RBI in the fifth inning and made a heads-up play to score the winning run.

Brenan Hanifee (7-9) earned the win and pitched a scoreless eighth inning while Diogenes Almengo (S, 8) closed out the ninth inning.

Hanifee came in relief and was solid. His only blemish came in the sixth inning. With the Keys up 1-0, Hanifee walked Carlos Sepulveda and hit Cam Balego to put two runners on with one-out. He then walked Tyler Payne on a full-count pitch to load the bases, and then allowed a six-pitch walk to Grant Fennell that brought in the tying run.

Aramis Ademen then grounded a pitch sharply down the first-base line, but Trevor Craport made a diving play to knock the ball down and get the out at first base. That allowed the go-ahead run to score as the Pelicans took a 2-1 lead.

Hanifee allowed a lead-off double in the seventh but stranded the runner and then set down the side in the eighth. He was tallied for just the two runs on four hits and three walks and did not strike out a batter in six innings.

Manny Rodriguez (0-3) was charged with the loss after allowing the pair of runs in the seventh. He struck out three in two innings.

MLB rehabber Nate Karns started the game for the Keys and made his best start yet. He struck out the first two batters he faced and threw just 23 pitches over two innings.

Jack Patterson traded off zeroes with Karns and Hanifee until the fifth. Patrick Dorrian drew a walk, and Sean Miller dropped a bunt single down the first base line to put runners at first and second with one-out. Thorburn then worked an 11-pitch at-bat and chopped one to the first baseman Wladimir Galindo, whose throw to second base skipped into left field. That allowed Dorrian to score to give the Keys a 1-0 lead.

Patterson was pulled after allowing the unearned run. He walked a pair of batters and struck out four in 4.1 innings.

The Keys and Pelicans square off again on Wednesday, July 24. LHP Cameron Bishop (0-8, 5.14) takes the mound for Frederick opposite RHP Alexander Vargas (2-2,3.71) for Myrtle Beach. First pitch is scheduled 7:00pm, with pregame coverage starting at 6:45pm on frederickkeys.com and the Tune In radio app.
