Kernels Struggle In 11-2 Loss To Kane County

After taking three of four games from the Beloit Snappers, the Cedar Rapids Kernels struggled to find their form in a 11-2 loss to Kane County on Wednesday night. The Cougars drew seven walks and pounded out 17 hits off Kernels pitchers to scored a combined nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Kernels starter Max Russell (1-2) allowed two runs on seven hits over four innings in taking the loss. Relievers Yeison Almeida and Young-Il Jung took the brunt of the damage, giving up a combined nine runs on nine hits with five walks in an inning.

The Kernels could only muster a run on three hits off Kane County starter Murphy Smith (7-0) over six innings. Jon Karcich drove in the Kernels first run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and Matt Long drove in the other Kernel run on sac fly off Jose Guzman in the ninth.

Michael Wing, Jean Segura and Eric Oliver each had a double and Justin Bass added a single to account for the Kernels four hits. Leonardo Gil went 5-6 with a double and RBI and Anthony Aliotti was 3-6 with two doubles and 3 RBI for Kane County.

The same two teams square off on Thursday night at 6:35 pm. Bring your thirst to the ballpark for 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where 12 oz. draft beer is $1.50 and 20 oz. bottled soda and water is just two dollars all game. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
