Peoria Chiefs News Release

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs and Beloit Snappers engaged in a pitching duel on Thursday, with the Snappers coming out on top with a 2-0 victory. The loss is the fourth in a row for the Chiefs and drops them to 20-24 on the second half of the season and 58-55 overall.

The Chiefs threatened to open the scoring in the third off starter Pedro Guerra. Anthony Giansanti led off and singled, advancing to third on a George Matheus double. With runners on second and third with no outs Logan Watkins struck out, Matt Cerda grounded out to first and did not advance the runners, and DJ Fitzgerald flew out to left field to end the inning without a run scoring.

Following dominant performances from both starting pitchers the Snappers finally scored in the seventh off reliever Ronny Morla. Danny Rams singled and advanced to second on a Josmil Pinto single. Lance Ray singled to score Rams and Yorby Martinez walked to load the bases. Wang-Wei Lin grounded out to Matt Cerda to score Pinto and give Beloit a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs got only one baserunner after the sixth inning as Luis Flores walked with one out in the seventh. Guerra responded by striking out Anthony Giansanti before Matheus lined out to first to end the inning. Lefty Nelvin Fuentes struck out the side in the eighth and again in the ninth to earn his first save of the season for the Snappers.

Despite getting a no-decision, Chiefs starter Brett Wallach was impressive in his best performance as a Chief. He went six shutout innings and only allowed two hits while walking two and striking out six. The six innings pitched tied his career high, a feat he accomplished three other times this season as a member of the Great Lakes Loons, the most recent coming on July 26 against Kane County.

Out of the bullpen Morla (4-3) pitched one inning and surrendered the only two runs of the game on three hits while walking one batter and striking out two. Yohan Gonzalez threw the final two innings for the Chiefs and did not allow a baserunner, striking out two.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Brett Wallach (SP) -Wallach tied a career high with six innings pitched and did not allow a run to score on Thursday. He limited the Snappers to just two hits and walked two batters while striking out six for a no-decision.
