South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - Trailing 4-0 to a team that had defeated them 17 of their previous 19 meetings this season, it would have been easy for the South Bend Silver Hawks to throw in the towel Thursday night at Coveleski Stadium. However, Errol Hollinger singled with two outs in the ninth to cap a three run inning that gave the Silver Hawks a 7-6 victory over the Great Lakes Loons.
Down 6-4 with one out in the ninth, Keon Broxton started the rally with a single off Steve Ames (LP, 0-2). David Nick singled and advanced to third on a single by Bobby Borchering that drove home Broxton and made the score 6-5. After Matt Davidson lined out, Ramon Castillo lined a two-strike pitch just inside the right field line to drive home Nick with a double and tie the game. That set the stage for Hollinger, who singled to left to pick up his fifth RBI of the game as Borchering scored the game winner.
The victory is South Bend's eighth of the walk-off variety this season and first against Great Lakes. Additionally, the Silver Hawks are now insured of winning their first series against the Loons in the past two years and first overall since taking two of three from the TinCaps in Fort Wayne July 10 through July 12.
Brian Budrow (WP, 5-2) was fantastic in relief, tossing 3.1 innings of perfect relief to earn the victory. Budrow entered in the sixth with the bases loaded and Great Lakes up 6-4, but he got out of the jam to eventually allow the South Bend come back.
Despite being down 4-0 in the fourth, South Bend fought back by scoring three runs against Allen Webster (ND). With one away, Davidson doubled before Castillo was hit by a pitch to bring up Hollinger with two men aboard. Hollinger lined the first pitch he saw over the wall in right-center for his second home run of the season, decreasing the Loons' lead to 4-3. After Great Lakes responded with two in the fifth on a two-RBI triple by Joe Becker, Hollinger drove in another with a single in the bottom half to make the score 6-4.
While South Bend struck first in the game one victory, Great Lakes broke through against Andrew Wolcott (ND) early in Thursday's contest with two in the opening inning. Nick Buss singled to lead off the game, advanced to third on a single by Rafael Ynoa, and crashed in to catcher Errol Hollinger while crossing home on a sacrifice fly by Angelo Songco. Ynoa scored later in the inning on a two-out RBI single by Brian Cavazos-Galvez to put the Loons up 2-0.
The Loons put up two more runs in the fourth against Wolcott. Chris Jacobs and Gorman Erickson each singled with one away before Jacobs scored on a Brian Ruggiano single. Nick Buss then grounded out, but Erickson still scored on the play to put Great Lakes up 4-0.
The Silver Hawks go for the sweep of the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) on a Fireworks Friday at 7:00 PM. South Bend sends RHP Randy Rodriguez (0-3, 5.52 ERA) to the bump, while LHP Greg Wilborn (2-0, 2.13 ERA) throws for Great Lakes. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
