Kernels Set Season-High in Runs While Blasting Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. - The Kernels (24-28) scored a season-high 16 runs on 16 hits as they smashed the Beloit Snappers 16-5 on Tuesday afternoon at Pohlman Field to take the series. The teams were scoreless and only one hit was recorded through the first four innings before the Kernels exploded for seven runs and eight hits in the fifth inning, leading them to the win. 15 of the 16 hits on the day were singles. The final hit of the game - an Ivory Thomas three-run home run in the eighth inning - was the only extra-base hit for the Kernels.

Every Kernels position player reached base as Mitch Garver paced the offense with three hits and four runs batted in. Tanner Vavra also had three hits. Ryan Walker reached base five times with two hits and three walks. The Kernels return home on Wednesday night as they take on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

The Kernels and Snappers were both scoreless through four innings, with a Beloit leadoff single in the first inning being the only hit. Derrick Penilla made the start for the Kernels and went four innings, allowing the one hit while striking out two and walking three for a no-decision.

The Kernels offense sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning as they exploded for seven runs to take a 7-0 advantage. The first eight batters reached base before an out was recorded. Vavra picked up the Kernels first hit when he singled into right, leading off the inning. Bo Altobelli followed by blooping a single down the right field line. Engelb Vielma reached on a RBI infield single that scored Vavra for the game's first run. Walker then reached on a bunt single that he pushed down the third base line, loading the bases. J.D. Williams was hit by a pitch to bring in Altobelli. Chad Christensen came up next and smashed a RBI single off of Snappers first baseman B.A. Vollmuth, allowing Vielma to score and make the score 3-0. Garver then bounced a RBI single through the left side to score Walker and put the Kernels up by four runs. Bryan Haar reached on a RBI infield single that scored Williams. A high throw by Snappers third baseman Luis Baez allowed Christensen to score and moved Garver to third base, increasing the lead to 6-0. Garver came home on a wild pitch by Beloit reliever Brent Powers to push the Kernels lead to 7-0. The Kernels were done scoring in the inning, but Vavra recorded another single, his second hit of the frame.

Beloit (23-28) scored three times in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 7-3. Ryan Matthews plated a pair with a two-run double, and Jaycob Brugman singled in another.

The Kernels responded by putting up three runs each in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. In the sixth inning three straight walks to begin the inning loaded the bases. Walker came home on Garver's RBI single into left. Kanzler plated Williams with a RBI single. Christensen crossed home with Vavra reached on a RBI fielder's choice when he beat out a potential double-play ball

With the score 10-3, the three-run seventh inning made it 13-3. Again, everyone batted as the Kernels sent nine men to the plate. Garver plated both Walker and Williams, who had walked, with a two-run single. Christensen scored when Kanzler reached on a RBI fielder's choice.

Beloit scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 13-5. Melvin Mercedes walked and later scored on a wild pitch by Kernels reliever Brandon Bixler. A RBI single by Tyler Marincov plated Mathews.

The Kernels scored three more in the eighth inning on a pinch-hit, three-run home run by Ivory Thomas to increase their lead to 16-5. Thomas pinch-hit for Williams and smacked his second long-ball of the season over the wall in left-center, scoring both Vielma and Walker. It was the Kernels only extra-base hit of the game.

Bixler (3-2) picked up the win for the Kernels. He went 2 2/3 innings and allowed five runs on four hits while striking out two and walking three. Jared Wilson went 1/3 inning while Hudson Boyd went two scoreless and hitless innings to finish the game.

Dylan Covey (3-3) allowed six runs and five hits over four-plus innings. He struck out two and walked three. Four Beloit pitchers combined to walk nine Kernels on the day, the most for the Kernels on the season.

The Kernels return home on Wednesday v. Wisconsin at 6:35 p.m. It's Free Money Wednesday, presented by First Federal Credit Union. $500 will be given out by at the main gates to fans age 18 and older, with the top cash prize of $100.
