West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - Ryne Stanek earned his first professional win in a dominant performance and the Bowling Green Hot Rods put on a two-out show to beat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 15-0, on Memorial Day Monday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The game spiraled out of control in the later innings after the outcome was all but decided. West Michigan (28-23) suffered the 15-run defeat in large part because of an inability to close out innings, as Bowling Green (23-27) tallied 13 of their 15 runs and 10 of their 15 hits with two outs.
But, in spite of the Hot Rods' offensive outburst, it was their starting pitcher that controlled the game.
The Tampa Bay Rays' first-round pick in 2013, Stanek (1-2) dazzled in just his fourth professional start. He retired 18 of the 19 batters he faced over six shutout innings, allowing his only baserunner on a two-out double by Raph Rhymes in the first inning. Stanek struck out four without issuing a walk. He threw 41 of his 56 pitches for strikes and did not throw more than 12 pitches in any one of his innings.
Meanwhile, the Hot Rods took a 5-0 lead exclusively on two-out rallies in the first and third innings.
In the opening frame, Armando Araiza blasted a high fly ball off the wall in right-center that scored Darryl George all the way from first. Araiza scored moments later on a bloop single by Johnny Field that gave Bowling Green a 2-0 lead.
In the third, it was a two-out double by Ty Young that sailed over the head of left fielder Tyler Gibson to score Field from first. Yoel Araujo came up next and blasted a two-run homer to left-center, pushing the Hot Rods' lead to 5-0.
But Araujo and the Hot Rods were not done, and the game - and emotions - got out of hand in the late-going.
Bowling Green rallied for five runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth to reach the 15-0 final. Araujo slugged his second two-run homer of the game during the seventh-inning rally and admired his work as the ball flew well beyond the fence. In the eighth, Ariel Soriano tagged up on a fly-out and took an extra base moments before Young split the gap in right-center for a two-run triple.
The next pitch from Zac Reininger came inside and glanced off of Araujo, who took his base without incident. Home plate umpire Matt Winter immediately ejected Reininger and, after the subsequent conversation, also tossed Whitecaps' manager Andrew Graham.
To get the final out of the game, West Michigan turned to Jose Zambrano. The utility infielder started the game on the bench before coming in to play third base after Tyler Gibson was removed after being hit on the hand by a pitch in the fifth inning. Making his first professional pitching appearance, Zambrano served up a three-run homer to Alexander Simon before inducing a groundout to end the bottom of the eighth.
Jon Maciel (2-2) suffered the loss. He was charged with five runs on eight hits over six innings of work.
The Whitecaps wrap up their six-game road trip on Tuesday night with an 8:05 p.m. ET first pitch against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. LHP Kevin Ziomek (3-4, 2.00) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP German Marquez (1-2, 4.70) of Bowling Green. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be on Wednesday, May 28, at 6:35 p.m. featuring half-price box and reserved seats for fans 50 and over on an SA Advisory Group Silver Slugger Night. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps' front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
