West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - The West Michigan Whitecaps suffered a second consecutive lopsided loss on Tuesday courtesy of a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark in Kentucky.
West Michigan (28-24) gave up double-digit runs to Bowling Green (24-27) for the second straight day, a feat accomplished against the Whitecaps' pitching staff just twice through their first 50 games of the season.
The 'Caps will now turn their attention to a three-game series against the Dayton Dragons starting Wednesday at Fifth Third Ballpark. West Michigan and Dayton are currently tied for the final playoff spot in the MWL-East with 18 games remaining in the first half.
After a 15-0 blowout on Monday, the Hot Rods picked up right where they left off on Tuesday.
Starting pitcher Kevin Ziomek and the Whitecaps fell behind early thanks to a sloppy first inning that included two singles, two errors, a hit batsman, a passed ball and a walk. The bases were loaded with one out when Johnny Field beat out a near double play to allow the first run to score. A passed ball let another run cross the plate while a two-out error by third baseman Francisco Contreras spotted Bowling Green a 3-0 lead.
One inning later, a two-out single by Field with the bases loaded drove in two more runs for a 5-0 cushion.
Armed with an early lead, Bowling Green starting pitcher German Marquez (2-2) cruised through six strong innings for the longest outing of his young career. The 19-year-old carried a three-hit shutout into the sixth before a two-out walk and a Dominic Ficociello triple cut the Whitecaps' deficit to 5-1. Marquez allowed one run on four hits over six innings, striking out six and walking one to earn the victory.
The Hot Rods continued to pour it on in the later innings. Juniel Querecuto smacked an RBI-double in the bottom of the sixth and Yoel Araujo added a run-scoring single with two outs in the seventh. Things got worse in the eighth, when back-to-back doubles by Field and Pat Blair pushed the Bowling Green advantage to 10-1.
In the top of the ninth, West Michigan got RBI-doubles from Wynton Bernard and Raph Rhymes to reach the 10-3 final.
Ziomek (3-5) was charged with five runs - three earned - on eight hits over five innings in the loss. He struck out six and walked one.
The Whitecaps return to Fifth Third Ballpark on Wednesday night for a 6:35 p.m. game against the Dayton Dragons that starts a series ripe with playoff implications. RHP Chad Green (0-2, 3.88) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP Sal Romano (3-3, 3.00) of Dayton in a game featuring half-price box and reserved seats for fans 50 and over on an SA Advisory Group Silver Slugger Night. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps' front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
