Kernels Cruise to a 16-5 Victory over Snappers

BELOIT, WISC - The Beloit Snappers were no match for Cedar Rapids in the series rubber match Tuesday morning, as the Kernels cruised to a 16-5 victory.

Beloit's Dylan Covey, who entered the game having not allowed more than two earned runs in his last five starts, gave up 6 runs in four innings. The 6 runs marks the most Covey has given up all season long.

The Kernels began the scoring in the 5th inning as they put up seven runs in the top of the frame. Eight different Kernels had RBI's on the day and four of the 7 runs put up in the inning came on RBI-singles.

The Snappers were able to make a modest cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning as they put put 3 runs. Ryan Mathews began the scoring in the inning, driving in two runs with a double to right field. Mathews was a long bright spot for the Beloit offense as he went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI's. He was the only for the Snappers to record more than one hit in the game.

Cedar Rapids was able to respond in the next inning, tacking on 6 more runs to take a 13-3 lead in the 7th inning and effectively ending the game.

Catcher Mitch Garver paved the way for the Kernels' offense, going 3-for-5 with 4 RBI's.

Derrick Penilla went four innings for the Kernels on the mound, giving up one hit and striking out two.

The Snappers travel to Quad Cities Wednesday before returning home Saturday night at 6:30 against the Clinton Lumberjacks.
