Crawford Named MWL Pitcher of the Week
May 27, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - West Michigan Whitecaps' pitcher Jonathon Crawford has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
The talented right-hander made just one start during the week of May 19-25, but it was a gem on Friday night in Dayton.
Crawford established new career-highs for strikeouts and innings pitched, working seven shutout innings and fanning nine while allowing just three singles and one walk. He did not allow a baserunner to reach scoring position and did not throw more than 13 pitches in any single inning. Crawford faced just two batters more than the minimum thanks to a double play and a pickoff and located 50 of his 74 pitches for strikes.
The dominant performance turned out to be crucial as the Whitecaps held on for a 1-0 win.
The Detroit Tigers' first-round pick in the 2013 draft, Crawford was selected 20th overall out of the University of Florida. Thanks to his latest win, the 22-year-old is now 2-1 with a 2.16 ERA, 41 strikeouts in 41.2 innings, and an opponents' batting average of .212 this season.
While his ERA has him ranked among the Midwest League leaders at seventh in the league, it has been even better since a rough Midwest League debut on April 4. Since that first outing, Crawford is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA (39.1IP/3ER) and has not allowed more than one earned run in any of his last seven starts.
Crawford joins fellow starting pitcher Austin Kubitza as Whitecaps' players that have been honored by Midwest League weekly awards this year. Kubitza was named Pitcher of the Week for the weeks of April 3-13 and April 28-May 4.
The Whitecaps wrap up their six-game road trip on Tuesday night with an 8:05 p.m. ET first pitch against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. LHP Kevin Ziomek (3-4, 2.00) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP German Marquez (1-2, 4.70) of Bowling Green. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will be on Wednesday, May 28, at 6:35 p.m. featuring half-price box and reserved seats for fans 50 and over on an SA Advisory Group Silver Slugger Night. Season, group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps' front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
