Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Starting pitching and big innings for the offense continued to be the story for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) on Tuesday night, as Bowling Green rolled to a 10-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) behind a strong start from German Marquez, and a three-hit effort by Johnny Field.
Marquez (2-2) was superb, as he tossed a career-high six innings. He allowed just one run which came across in his final inning of work. Marquez struck out a season-high six batters and earned his second victory of the season.
The Hot Rods offense struck first for a thirteenth consecutive game, as they scored three runs in the first on a fielder's choice run batted in for Field, a passed ball, and a fielding error by Francisco Contreras. The advantage was stretched with two runs in the second. Alexander Simon led off with a single, and one out later he moved to second base on hit by Kean Wong. Armando Araiza reached on an infield single to load the bases, and Field bashed a single to left field to drive home both Simon and Wong. Bowling Green led 5-0 after just two innings.
Juniel Querecuto helped continue the offensive outburst in the sixth after West Michigan got on the board in the top half. With Yoel Araujo at second base, Querecuto doubled to right field. In the seventh, Araujo singled home Granden Goetzman to stretch the lead to 7-1.
Like Monday afternoon, Bowling Green put the game out of reach in the eighth. With two outs, Araiza and Goetzman drew back-to-back walks. Field then doubled home Araiza, and Pat Blair put a cap on the night with a double to center field that scored both Goetzman and Field. The Whitecaps scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but it was not nearly enough.
Field finished his night with three hits, the second consecutive game in which Field has achieved the feat. He drove in four runs, and crossed the plate twice as well. Wong also added three hits, as all but one of the Hot Rods lineup recorded at least one hit.
Kevin Ziomek (3-5) allowed five runs, three of them earned, in five innings and was handed the loss.
Bowling Green improved to 4-2 on the current homestand with the win Tuesday night, and they'll welcome in the Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres) for a three-game series on Wednesday night. It will be a Meijer Wednesday, which means half-price tickets for fans. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Bowling Green Ballpark, and gates will open up at 6 p.m.
