Peoria Chiefs News Release

GENEVA, IL- For the second day in a row the Peoria Chiefs lost a late lead and fell by the score of 5-4 to the Kane County Cougars. The Tuesday afternoon loss is the fifth in a row for the Chiefs and drops their record to 27-24 heading into a crucial six-game homestand.

Kane County came out swinging in the bottom of the first against Blake McKnight. Jacob Hanneman tripled, Danny Lockhart walked and the Cougars took a 1-0 lead on a single by Ben Carhart. Lockhart was thrown out trying to steal third and McKnight retired the next two batters to escape the inning.

The Chiefs got even against Duane Underwood in the third. Vaughn Bryan singled and moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs. Juan Herrera tied the game with a double to center, his 11th double of the season.

As McKnight cruised through the Cougars lineup, the Chiefs took the lead in the sixth against Underwood. Herrera singled with out and Carson Kelly followed with a base-hit. Mason Katz flew out to right and Herrera took third. The Chiefs went on top 2-1 as Kenny Peoples-Walls singled to left with two outs. Gerwuins Velazco walked but Underwood escaped the inning as the Chiefs left the bases loaded.

McKnight's streak of setting down 14 straight Cougars ended in the sixth as Trey Martin and Hanneman singled. With two down and runners on second and third, Martin tried to score on a pitch in the dirt but Kelly blocked it and tagged him out to end the inning.

The Chiefs were not as fortunate in the seventh as Jacob Rogers walked with one out and Jordan Hankins doubled. Brandon Lee came on for McKnight with one out and Kelly picked Rogers off third base. David Bote walked and Shawon Dunston Jr. reached on an infield single to load the bases. Martin, who hadn't homered since July 17, 2012, launched a grand slam down the left-field line for a 5-2 Cougars lead.

Peoria bounced back against reliever Michael Wagner as Kelly hit a home run off the scoreboard in left to start the eighth. Down 5-3 into the ninth the Chiefs loaded the bases with one out against Tyler Bremer on two singles and a walk. Kelly walked to cut the deficit to 5-4 and put the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second. But Bremer bounced back to strike out both Katz and Peoples-Walls to end the game with the bases loaded.

McKnight allowed two runs on five hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out five and at one point retired 14 Cougars in a row in the no-decision. Lee (0-1) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over 1 2/3 innings with a home run allowed in the loss.
