Clinton Splits Pair with Wisconsin

Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The Clinton LumberKings avoided a series sweep by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night at Ashford University Field. The L'Kings lost 6-2 in 10 innings in game one, the conclusion of Monday's suspended contest, before grabbing a one-run win in the nightcap, 4-3.

The LumberKings (26-24) entered Tuesday just one-half game behind Peoria for second place in the MWL Western Division and remained there at night's end.

Game one picked up in the top of the fourth inning with Wisconsin (24-27) in front, 2-0. Clinton scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings off of Tristan Archer, tying the game at two. Jeff Zimmerman singled and Joe DeCarlo doubled, and Archer allowed Zimmerman to race home from third on a wild pitch. In the sixth, Clinton took advantage of an error after Jack Reinheimer singled and swiped second. DeCarlo brought home the tying run with a run-scoring groundout.

The L'Kings had a chance to walk-off in the ninth, but left the winning run at second base.

And in the tenth, Wisconsin buried Clinton with one big blast.

L'Kings closer Emilio Pagan, who had relieved Paul Fry with two away in the eighth, came out for the tenth. An unusually wild Pagan (1-2) beaned Omar Garcia, walked Clint Coulter, and plunked Rafael Neda on a 0-2 pitch in the back, loading the bases. Michael Ratterree stepped up, and cleared the bases with one swing - a moonshot grand slam which hit off the Coors Light Picnic Pavilion banner in left.

Clinton went quietly in the tenth against lefty Trevor Seidenberger, 1-2-3. The L'Kings wasted an outstanding effort by Paul Fry, who delivered his best relief outing of the season. He threw 4.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out a season-high six.

The 6-2 loss didn't deter the LumberKings for long, however. But game two didn't start off on the right foot, either.

Lefty Eddie Campbell (3-3) struggled through the first two innings, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks.

Down 2-0, Clinton's bats awoke in the third for three runs. Ian Miller drew a one-out walk, and after moving to second on a balk by Anthony Banda, scored on Jack Reinheimer's fourth triple of the season. Marcus Littlewood, mired in a 5-for-34 slump, sliced a run-scoring double into the right-field corner, tying the game at two. One out later, Zimmerman gave the L'Kings their first lead of the series with an RBI single to right.

The lead didn't last long, as the Timber Rattlers took advantage of a Chantz Mack misplayed fly ball - ruled a double - leading off the fourth. Jose Pena scored Ratterree from second with his second RBI single to left, tying the game at three.

But like Wisconsin who took the lead for good with a HR in game one, Clinton's Zach Shank skied his second home run of the season over the fence in left with two outs in the fourth, providing the final 4-3 margin.

Campbell settled down after a shaky first two innings and went on to give up just three runs - all earned - on three walks and three hits. His six-inning, five-strikeout outing resulted in his third quality start of 2014.

Thyago Vieira picked up his first professional save with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

Ian Miller extending his hit streak to seven games in game one with a single but saw his streak snapped in the nightcap, going 0-for-3. Corey Simpson also extended his hit streak to six games in the opener but went 0-for-3 in the finale.

Clinton welcomes the Kane County Cougars (35-17) to town for a three-game series beginning Wednesday night at 6:30 PM CT at Ashford University Field. Right-hander Carlos Misell (5-3, 3.74) will start for the LumberKings who look to gain ground on the MWL Western Division leading Cougars. He'll be opposed by right-hander Paul Blackburn (5-1, 2.37). The broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, wcciradio.com, and lumberkings.com.
