Team Notes

Approaching Halfway: Entering play on Thursday, the Cougars are 31-35 and still have an outside shot of reaching the season's midway mark with a .500 record. Cougars pitcher Connor Hoehn was added to the Midwest League Western Division All-Star roster, and joins teammates Ian Krol and Max Stassi for the league's midseason classic, to be held Tuesday in Fort Wayne. Hoehn is 4-3 with a 3.45 ERA in 21 relief appearances out of the Cougars' bullpen.

Alumni Reunion at Wrigley Field: A half-dozen former Cougars on the Oakland A's roster were in town this week for a three-game interleague series against the Cubs in Chicago. Despite last night's loss against the Cubs, several Cougars alumni were on the field including '08 Cougar Tyson Ross, who pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Infielder Cliff Pennington ('05) was a late-inning substitute and had a base hit against another former Cougar in Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster ('96).

Former Cougars pitcher Dallas Braden ('04) gets the start for the A's in this afternoon's rubber game at 1:20 p.m. at Wrigley Field.

111th Former Cougar Makes MLB Debut: Congratulations to 2007 Cougar Sam Demel, who made his Major League debut Wednesday evening for the Arizona Diamondbacks against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. Demel pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and had just joined the D'Backs after being traded from Oakland to Arizona for outfielder Conor Jackson.

Demel pitched in nine games for the Cougars during the summer of '07, recording four saves and not allowing an earned run in his first eight outings with the Cougars. His first professional save came as a Cougar on August 8 against Lansing.

Demel becomes the 111th former Cougar to reach baseball's highest stage, joining A's pitcher Tyson Ross as the second alumnus to make his MLB debut this season...is also the first former Cougar to debut with a team other than the Cougars' parent club A's since Ryan Webb broke in with the Padres on July 8, 2009...is the third former Cougar to debut with Arizona (Vladimir Nunez on 9/11/98, Bill Murphy on 9/3/07).

Cougars Blogger: In conjunction with the Chicago Tribune, Cougars pitcher Bo Schultz will be blogging for the Tribune's website as part of their "Players Only" blog series. The blog, written by Chicago-area and national athletes, has included the likes of Jonathan Toews, Helio Castroneves and Lance Briggs.

Schultz's latest entry is online now and can be accessed by visiting http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/players-only.
