Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - Former West Delaware HS prep star B.J. Hermsen made the most of a chance to pitch in front of his hometown fans as he held the Cedar Rapids Kernels to just one hit in a 4-0 shutout on Thursday night. The Masonville, IA native used 108 pitches (68 strikes) and issued only one walk to improve to 4-1 on the year in front of 4,691 fans at Perfect Game Field.

Hermsen carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning but a one out single by Justin Bass broke up the no hit bid. He issued a walk to Mike Trout in the fourth, and with Matt Long batting, Trout stole his 33rd base of the year. Bass and Trout were the only Kernels to reach base in the game.

Kernels starter Stephen Locke (2-1) allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits, walked three and struck out five over six innings. Cedar Rapids had some defensive problems, committing three errors that led to two unearned Beloit runs.

Meanwhile, the Kernels picked up some help from the Kane County Cougars, who beat Quad Cities, 3-1. The Kernels maintain their 2.5 game lead over the River Bandits and cut their Magic Number to one to clinch the first half MWL West crown for the first time since 1992.

The Kernels will look to snap their three game losing streak against the Burlington Bees, the MWL affiliate of the Kansas City Royals on Friday night with a doubleheader starting at 5:35 pm. It's a 98.1 KHAK Country Night - wear your favorite country duds, enjoy a petting zoo and wild west stagecoach from 2 Joes Farm in the parking lot from 5:30 to 9 pm, and a country concert from 8 Seconds, following game two.

It's also a Progressive Beer Night where 16 oz. draft beer is $1 starting at 5:30 pm and goes up a dollar each hour until reaching full price. The current home stand continues through Sunday, June 20th.
