Dayton Dragons News Release

Fort Wayne, Ind. - Jon Alia's run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth inning brought in the tie-breaking run as the Fort Wayne TinCaps spoiled a frantic Dayton Dragons comeback to defeat the Dragons 6-5 on Thursday night. The TinCaps won two of three games in the series. All three games were decided by one run.

The Dragons were no-hit over the first seven innings by Fort Wayne starting pitcher Jose DePaula and trailed 4-0 going to the eighth before they exploded for eight hits in the eighth inning and took a 5-4 lead. But the TinCaps answered with two in the bottom of the eighth, taking advantage of the sixth Dragons error of the game, to earn the win.

DePaula left after seven innings with the no-hitter in tact. Hayden Beard replaced him on the mound to start the eighth and Dayton Josh Garton hit his first pitch for a home run to left field to get Dayton started. Frank Pfister singled and went to third on Alex Oliveras' base hit. Oliveras stole second and Ryan LaMarre singled to right to bring in two and make it 4-3. Henry Rodriguez doubled to right to move LaMarre to third, and Tommy Nurre's sacrifice fly tied the game. Mark Fleury singled to left to bring in Rodriguez and give Dayton a 5-4 lead. Shane Carlson followed with a single to left to move Fleury to second and Garton collected his second hit of the inning, a single to left for the Dragons eighth hit of the frame. But on the play, Fleury was tagged out at the plate as he tried to score from second to retire the side.

Dragons reliever Mike Konstanty (0-3) came on to pitch in the bottom of the eighth and walked Jason Hagerty to start the inning. Nate Freiman singled to left to move Hagerty to second. Edinson Rincon then hit a ground ball to shortstop that was misplayed by Dayton's Didi Gregorius for an error as the tying run scored. One batter later, Jason Braun replaced Konstanty with men at second and third and one out. Braun allowed a line drive hit to left by Alia that brought in Freiman with what turned out to be the winning run. The Dragons were retired in order in the ninth by Fort Wayne reliever Nick Schumacher.

Fort Wayne took the lead in the third inning with three unearned runs. Wande Olabisi began the inning by reaching on an error by Dragons third baseman Frank Pfister and later scored on a single by Danny Payne. With two outs, Jason Hagerty blasted a home run to left field to make it 3-0. The TinCaps added another unearned run in the fourth to go ahead 4-0 before the Dragons uprising in the eighth.

All eight Dragons hits in the game came in the same inning. Garton's two hits in the inning gave him a 2 for 4 night to lead the attack.

The Dragons established season-highs for most hits in an inning and most errors in a game. The eight hits in the eighth were two short of the club record and the six errors were one short of the team's all-time mark.

Dayton (28-38) will play at home on Friday at 7:00 p.m. against the Great Lakes Loons at Fifth Third Field. Jacob Johnson (3-4, 4.64) will start for Dayton against Matt Magill (2-0, 3.33). The game will be television on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Channel 23 on Time Warner Basic Cable systems). Hall-of-Fame writer Hal McCoy will provide commentary on the telecast. Saturday night's game will also be televised starting at 7:00 p.m.

Notes: Outfielder Cameron Satterwhite (bruised leg) and first baseman Chris Richburg (hit in the head with a pitch Wednesday) missed the game for Dayton.
