Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Former Wisconsin Timber Rattler Kalian Sams got the best of his old team Thursday night, lining a walk-off single down the left-field line to plate Vinnie Catricala for a 3-2 Clinton LumberKings' win. The single provided Clinton's fifth walk-off win this season and snapped a four-game losing streak.

Catricala singled to left to start the ninth against left-hander Caleb Thielbar. Tim Morris moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt, and Welington Dotel was intentionally walked to get to Sams. That decision backfired as Sams ripped Thielbar's offering down the left-field line before being mobbed at second base by teammates.

The walk-off hit was the third by Sams this year. He homered to beat Peoria, 5-4 for Clinton's first win of 2010 on April 9 and did it again with a solo home run in an 11-10 win in 11 innings over Quad Cities on April 16 (his third blast of the game). Sams played with Wisconsin in 2007 when the Timber Rattlers were still the low-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners.

The LumberKings erased a 1-0 lead thanks to another former Rattler, Daniel Carroll. His third-inning two-out bleeder dropped in front of Kentrail Davis in left to score both Gabriel Noriega and Nick Franklin for a 2-1 advantage.

Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez limited the Rattlers to two runs - one earned - on eight hits over 7.0 innings. Michael Marseco singled and scored to tie the game in the fifth on Cutter Dykstra's single past the drawn-in infield. Left-hander Brian Moran (W, 3-1) fired 2.0 scoreless innings after Ramirez's exit.

Thielbar (L, 0-2) yielded the game-winner on two hits over 2.0 innings. Wisconsin starter Del Howell turned in 6.1 innings of two-run, four-hit baseball in his longest outing of the season.

The LumberKings (36-30) conclude the first half with a three-game road series in Beloit beginning tomorrow night. First pitch against the Snappers (35-31) at Pohlman Field is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Left-hander Jon Hesketh (3-4, 4.55) will make his 13th start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
