South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Midland, MI - Jerry Sands crushed a two-out home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, capping a Great Lakes Loons comeback in a 7-6 victory over the South Bend Silver Hawks. The Silver Hawks blew two leads of two runs or more in falling to 0-12 against Great Lakes this season.

The homer by Sands off of Adam Worthington (LP, 0-1) gave the Loons a 7-6 lead after they earlier trailed 2-0 and 6-3. The blast, which hit off the top of the flag pole beyond the left field fence, was Sands' league-leading 18th of the season and was the exclamation point on a four RBI night.

South Bend took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bobby Borchering blasted a two run homer against Loons starter Allen Webster (ND). It was Borchering's eighth homer of the season, tying him with Matt Davidson for the team lead.

The lead didn't last long at all, with Great Lakes scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Sands had a two run single and Jaime Ortiz added a RBI single against Scottie Allen (ND) to give Great Lakes a 3-2 lead.

South Bend tied the game 3-3 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Davidson. Davidson then gave the Silver Hawks another lead in the fifth, crushing a three run homer to left for a 6-3 advantage and to retake the team lead in homers with his ninth of the season.

Thursday marked the third time this season that Davidson and Borchering have homered in the same game. Davidson's four RBIs marks the third occasion he has driven in that many in a single game in 2010.

The Loons chipped away, getting single tallies in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to tie the game, setting the stage for Sands' big blast in the eighth.

J.B. Paxson (WP, 2-1) got the win with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. Andy Suiter (ND) also tossed 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen after starter Webster was tagged for six earned runs in 5.0 innings.

South Bend's bullpen was a different story, with Diogenes Rosario (ND), Chris Odegaard (ND), and Worthington all allowing one run (Rosario's was an unearned run). Allen allowed four runs in 4.2 innings as the starter.

Sands had a RBI double in the fifth inning in addition to his early single and late homer.

South Bend returns to Coveleski Stadium Friday to battle the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Welcome Coach Kelly Night and a Friday Fireworks celebration. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 PM Eastern Time with the gates opening at 6:30 PM. RHP Brad Gemberling (1-4, 3.66 ERA) starts for the Silver Hawks and will be opposed by Fort Wayne LHP Nick Greenwood (4-3, 3.96 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
