Kalamazoo's Ftorek Sets ECHL Career Games Played Record

PRINCETON, N.J. - Kalamazoo Wings defenseman Sam Ftorek set the ECHL record for career games played on Saturday when he took the ice for his 790th league game at Toledo. Ftorek breaks the record of 2010 ECHL Hall of Fame inductee Cam Brown, who played in 789 career ECHL games from 1991-2006 with Columbus, Erie, Baton Rouge and Gwinnett.

The 40-year-old Ftorek, who played in 1,000th professional game on Friday, has played in all 23 games for Kalamazoo this season tallying five assists and adding 27 penalty minutes.

Ftorek has played 13 seasons in the ECHL with Mobile, Augusta, Greensboro, Gwinnett, Fresno, Cincinnati and Kalamazoo. He ranks 18th in league history with 333 assists and is 25th all-time with 519 points.

"On behalf of the ECHL, I would like to congratulate Sam Ftorek on breaking the long-standing ECHL record for career games played," ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna said. "It speaks to the hard work, dedication, professionalism and love of the game that Sam has portrayed for all of these years."

Last season, Ftorek led ECHL defensemen in scoring with 47 points (13g-34a) in 70 games on his way to earning a spot on the All-ECHL First Team .

The son of long-time NHL player and coach Robbie Ftorek, he is tied for fifth in ECHL postseason history with 84 games played, and advanced to the 2011 Kelly Cup Finals with Kalamazoo.
