Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review

December 19, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

The Kalamazoo Wings started their week on Friday (12/16) at home against the Quad City Mallards. The K-Wings offense exploded in the opening period getting goals from both Jason Deitsch (9) and Greg Labenski (4). After a scoreless second period, it was the Mallards that would fly high, scoring the games next three goals en route to a 3-2 victory over the K-Wings

On Saturday (12/17), the K-Wings hosted the Adirondack Frostbite during the 6th Annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. Fans did have to wait long launch their bears. Tyler Rennette (11) lit the lamp just 18 seconds into the game to begin the bear throwing frenzy. The Rennette goal would prove to be the game-winner, as the K-Wings defeated the Frostbite 4-0. Goaltender Joel Martin stopped all 20 shots he faced to record his league leading 4th shutout of the season. Kalamazoo also received another goal from Rennette (12), as well as goals from Dustin Virag (3) and Jason Deitsch (10) in the victory.

The K-Wings concluded the week on Sunday (12/18) against the Port Huron Flags. Despite putting up a season high 48 shots and receiving the game's first two goals from Nick Bootland (12) and Mike Manley (9), the K-Wings couldn't hold off a late charge from Port Huron, who defeated the K-Wings 3-2 in a shootout. The point earned from the shootout loss by Kalamazoo places the K-Wings two points behind the Muskegon Fury, who they will face later this week, for first place in the Central Division.

Fast Forward
With Christmas this upcoming weekend, it will be a light week for Kalamazoo, as the K-Wings will lace up their skates just twice this week. The K-Wings first test of the week will be Wednesday (12/21) against the Motor City Mechanics. On the season, the K-Wings are 1-1-0 against the Mechanics, who are fourth in Central Division, nine points behind the K-Wings.

On Friday (12/23), the K-Wings return home to host the two-time defending Colonial Cup Champions, the Muskegon Fury. The K-Wings, who start the week just two points behind the top team in the league, are 1-1-0 against the Fury this season, but both of those games were played in Muskegon. Besides the Fury making their first appearance of the season at Wings Stadium, the K-Wings will also welcome Santa Claus to the 7:30 p.m. face-off.
