December 19, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
LAST WEEK'S GAMES: The Roanoke Valley Vipers finished up a four-game series with the Danbury Trashers Sunday, as the two teams settled for a split, each taking a win and a loss on their home ice. Both Vipers wins came in shootouts, as the Trashers were able to gain six points over the four games to take over first place in the UHL Eastern Division from the Adirondack Frostbite. The Vipers remain in a lock for third place with the Richmond RiverDogs and will look to pull ahead with a win over the âDogs Tuesday night at the Roanoke Civic Center. The Vipers' record currently sits at 9-12-4 with 22 points in the division standings.
Wednesday, December 14th @ Danbury
Roanoke Valley Vipers 4, Danbury Trashers 3, SO
The Vipers found themselves down to the Trashers by three goals midway through the second period Wednesday night, but started a late rally of their own in the third period, getting three goals from David Beauregard, Josh Tataryn, and Jan Jas to tie the game and force a shootout. Gray Shaneberger scored in round two of the shootout for the Vipers to put them ahead, but Jamie Thompson evened the score for the Trashers in round three as he beat Jamie Hodson. Josh Tataryn, who the Vipers can typically count on to come through in a shootout, did so in round five as the Vipers took the huge come-from-behind win at the Danbury Ice Arena to start off the four-game series between the two teams.
Friday, December 16th @ Danbury
Danbury Trashers 3, Roanoke Valley Vipers 0
Roanoke Valley was shut out for the first time this season by the Trashers Friday, as they were unable to come up with any goals to match the three the Danbury offense got past Jamie Hodson, who despite being credited with the loss made 32 saves. The teams were increasingly physical in the game, putting up a total of 81 penalty minutes, including five majors, two 10-minute misconducts, and a game misconduct.
Saturday, December 17th vs. Danbury
Roanoke Valley Vipers 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 3, SO
Returning to their home ice, the Vipers got back to their winning ways on Saturday, beating the Trashers in a shootout for the second time in three games. The Trashers would score three times during the game, but the Vipers responded with one of their own within two minutes of each. Josh Tataryn, Mike Krelove, and L.P. Martin each netted goals for the Vipers. Roanoke Valley excelled in their turn of the shootout, as all three shooters - Steve Crusco, Martin, and Gray Shaneberger - were successful.
Sunday, December 18th vs. Danbury
Danbury Trashers 4, Roanoke Valley Vipers 2
The Vipers and Trashers concluded their four game series on Sunday at the Roanoke Civic Center, splitting the set with Danbury 2-2. Danbury went up by four midway through the third period before the Vipers were able to get on the board. The late Vipers rally, including goals from Jan Jas and newcomer Mike Wiggins, was not enough, however, and Roanoke fell by a final score of 4-2 as the Trashers advanced to first place in the Eastern Division.
THIS WEEK'S GAMES: The Vipers will play two more at home on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 20th and 21st before heading to Adirondack on Friday to face the second place Frostbite. The Richmond RiverDogs will visit the Vipers on Tuesday for $5.00 Ticket Night at the Roanoke Civic Center. Flint will make the trip to Roanoke on Wednesday for the first time this season as the Vipers look to get two more wins under their belts before heading to Glens Falls, New York.

VIPER BITES
-Vipers goaltender Jamie Hodson was nominated for the Southern Sports Supply UHL Player of the Week for the week ending 12/18/05. Hodson has played in eight straight games with the injury to Shawn Conschafter, and made 103 regulation saves over four games against the Trashers, also earning two shootout wins in the series.
-Rookie winger L.P. Martin received the team's nomination for the Sher-Wood UHL Player of the Week for the week ending 12/18/05. Martin led the Vipers in points during their most recent four-game series with Danbury, with a goal and three assists and an even plus minus rating. The 21-year-old rookie scored the game-tying goal on Saturday at the Roanoke Civic Center to force a shootout, and then scored the game-winner in the extra rounds as the Vipers brought home their second win of the series.
-The Vipers have been hurt by the losses of offensive gem Mark Scott and rookie Matt Miller, who have both been placed on the injured reserve. The two forwards had combined for 23 points over 16 games played on the season, and the Vipers look forward to their return to the lineup. Shawn Conschafter has also been added to the injured reserve with a broken finger, and the Vipers have added emergency backup goaltender Marty Magers to take Conschafter's spot until his return.
-The Vipers made their first major roster move of the season last week, trading defenseman Matt Kenny to the Fort Wayne Komets for winger Mike Wiggins and defenseman Josh VanderBreggen, the latter of which is expected to join the team this week. Wiggins already has two points as a Viper, with an assist on Saturday and a goal on Sunday in the Vipers games against the Trashers.
