RiverDogs week in review

December 19, 2005 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Richmond RiverDogs News Release

THE WEEK THAT WAS:

December 16, 2005 @ Flint (1-0 win)

The RiverDogs made their first western trip and their first opponents was Flint. It was "homecoming" for General Manager/Head Coach Robbie S. Nichols and several members of the RiverDogs who wore the Generals sweater last season. The homecoming was sweet as the team came away with their first shutout of the season by the count of 1-0 before 1,828 at Perani Arena. Mike D'Alessandro made 33 saves for the shutout win. Mike Oliveira scored a power play goal, which were all the Dogs needed to win.

December 17, 2005 @ Rockford (5-1)

Richmond traveled to Rockford and battled the IceHogs and, unlike against Flint, the IceHogs got the early goal and took the play to the RiverDogs to the tune of 5-1. Mike D'Alessandro was in nets for the RiverDogs and he stopped 48 of 53 shots. Mike Oliveira scored a shorthanded goal in the first to tie the game, his fourth shorthanded goal of the season. The contest saw a much-anticipated heavyweight battle between Rockford's Robin Big Snake and Richmond's Brendan Tedstone and the fans got a real good battle. Attendance at the Rockford Metrocentre: 4,482.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

The RiverDogs will play three games this week beginning on Tuesday, December 20 against the Roanoke Valley Vipers at the Roanoke Civic Center. This game is the first of two re-scheduled games between the Vipers and RiverDogs. Originally, the two teams were to face-off in early November but the games were postponed due to poor ice conditions at the Civic Center. The RiverDogs return to the Richmond Coliseum for a 7:05 tilt against the Elmira Jackals on Wednesday, December 21. The week will conclude on Friday with a home battle between the RiverDogs and the Flint Generals.

299 AND CLOSING IN ON 300:

Richmond RiverDogs General Manager/Head Coach Robbie S. Nichols is closing in on 300 victories as a head coach in the United Hockey League. Last Friday night, in the RiverDog's 1-0 shutout win over the Generals was Nichols' 299 win. At the beginning of the season, Nichols was third in all-time coaching wins in the UHL behind Danbury's Paul Gillis and Fort Wayne's Greg Puhalski.
