Kalamazoo Growlers News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich., - The Kalamazoo Growlers lost their fourth straight in a 4-1 effort against the Rockford Rivets.
Kalamazoo native Adam Wheaton (1-4, Trine) went 6.1 innings allowing four hits and three runs. The sophomore also walked two Rivets and struck out another three.
After allowing a four pitch walk to start the ballgame, Wheaton retired the next 11 batters he faced.
The Growlers led 1-0 after the first, as Nick Neville (South Carolina) led off with a double. The junior then scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Hunter Thorn (Purdue Northwest).
Kalamazoo would only gain two more hits over the final eight innings, one by Brooks Coetzee (Notre Dame) in the fifth, and the other by Jimmy Sullivan (UVA) in the seventh.
Three of Rockford's four runs came in the fourth on a two-out double by Matt Higgins (Bellarmine) and back-to-back home runs by Alex Steinbach (Illinois) and Kirk Liebert (Wabash Valley).
The Rivets would cap it off with an insurance run in the eighth on Higgins' second double of the game.
Eamon Horwedel (Ohio) came in for the eighth and retired all three batters he faced via strikeouts.
Jarret Olson (4-2, MSU) earned his fourth win of the summer after going seven innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.
