Former Mankato MoonDog Sam Selman Debuts with the Giants

Rochester, Minn. - Former Mankato MoonDog Sam Selman, made his Major League debut for the San Francisco Giants on Thursday, August 1, 2019. Selman is the 225th former Northwoods League player to reach the Major League level.

Selman, who played collegiately at Vanderbilt University, played for the Mankato MoonDogs in 2010 and 2011. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 2nd round of the 2012 MLB draft.

Selman was 2-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 12 games with the MoonDogs in 2010. He struck out 32 batters in 44 innings and walked 36. In 2011 he was 2-4 again with the same 3.88 ERA in eight games. His strikeout numbers improved though as he had 46 in 41.2 innings pitched.

Selman spent the 2012-2018 seasons in the Royals minor league system. He made it as high as AAA with the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Royals affiliate in the Pacific Coast League. After the 2018 season he signed with the Giants and started the 2019 with the Richmond Flying Squirrels of the AA Eastern League. After four games he was promoted to the Sacramento River Cats of the AAA Pacific Coast League.

Over eight minor league seasons Selman is 31-33 with a 3.71 ERA in 246 games. He has 649 strikeouts in 523.1 innings pitched and has saved 11 games.

Prior to being called up by the Giants, Selman was 3-1 with a 1.15 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched between Richmond and Sacramento.

In his Major League debut against the Philadelphia Phillies, Selman entered the game in relief in the fifth inning. He pitched one inning and allowed one run on one hit and had a strikeout.
