Game Rewind

Thursday, February 14th Vs Trenton Titans (Trenton 4-Kalamazoo 3)

Kalamazoo, MI - Powered by a 3-for-6 performance with the man-advantage, the Trenton Titans (20-23-4-3) disrupted the Kalamazoo Wings (23-22-4-1) Valentine's Day plans by defeating the K-Wings 4-3 Thursday night during the 13th Annual Pink Ice Game, presented by WKFR, SeaLandAir Travel & Apple Vacations.

In his first game with the Titans, Marvin Degon notched his first goal with a power-play strike 3:21 into the contest with a rocket from the left-circle.

Using their power-play prowess in the second period, Trenton extended their lead 2:27 into the stanza with a tally from former K-Wing Bryan Haczyk (9th).

Ironically, it was the K-Wings power-play unit that recorded their first goal of the evening, a redirect marker from Brett Lysak (15th).

The goal from Lysak sparked the K-Wings, as Kyle Page responded 41 seconds later with his first goal of the season that was setup by a pass from Joe Charlebois.

Capping off three-goal stretch in a span of 3:36, Wesley Myron recorded his second assist of the game on a Dustin Cloutier tally. Cutting in front of Scott Wedgewood, Cloutier tipped a Myron slap shot past the netminder for his seventh goal this season.

Earning his second-goal of the game, Haczyk (10th) pulled the Titans even late in the period with Trenton's third power-play goal out of five attempts.

Trenton went ahead for good in the third period with Blake Kessel's fifth goal of the season. Working the puck into the high-slot, Kessel delivered the fatal blow with a slap shot 12:05 into the period.

Friday, February 15th Vs Toledo Walleye (Kalamazoo 3-Toledo 2-Overtime)

Kalamazoo, MI - Earning a season-low 17 shots, the Kalamazoo Wings (24-22-4-1) were outshot 42-17, but found away to defeat the Toledo Walleye (28-18-1-4) 3-2 Friday night at Wings Stadium in front of a crowd of 4,166 during the 2nd Annual Susan G. Komen Game, presented by Consumers Energy.

Limited to three shots in the first period didn't hinder the K-Wings in the stanza. Earning his first points as a professional the night before with a pair of assists, Wesley Myron only had to wait 24 hours to notch his first pro goal. Skating in the slot, Myron lifted a wrist shot over the glove hand of Jimmy Spratt on the team's first shot of the game.

Kalamazoo's shooting percentage stayed at 100 percent after their second shot from Kory Karlander (8th) 8:40 into the period. In his second game since returning from the 21-Day IR, Karlander snuck in front of the crease to score on a backhander.

Scoring off a deflection, Toledo cut Kalamazoo's leads in half 2:48 into the second period with a shorthanded tally from Travis Novak (8th). The shorthander was Novak's team-leading tying second of the season and the Walleye's league-high tying 10th of the season.

Skating up the right wing midway in the period, former K-Wing, John May recorded his second goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. May last scored in his last game with the K-Wings back on January 18th against the Evansville IceMen.

Remaining tied through regulation, Aaron Clarke (16th) earned the victory for the K-Wings scoring 21 seconds into overtime. Clarke earned his team-best fifth game-winning goal deflecting a Yann Sauve pass. The 16 goals by Clarke tie him with Nick Sirota for the K-Wings team-lead in that category.

Stopping 40 shots for the victory, Joel Martin (22-19-4-1) earned his 200th victory of his career.

Saturday, February 16th @ Toledo Walleye (Kalamazoo 4-Toledo 3-Overtime)

Toledo, OH - For the second straight night, the Kalamazoo Wings (25-22-4-1) needed an overtime effort to knock off the Toledo Walleye (28-18-2-4), this time with a 4-3 victory Saturday night at the Huntington Center.

Striking quickly after a K-Wings turnover, Willie Coetzee, who was reassigned in the late afternoon by the Detroit Red Wings from the Grand Rapids Griffins, made the most of this return to the Walleye by scoring his 19th goal of the season 2:03 into the contest.

Killing a penalty in the second period, Nick Sirota used a great individual effort to the split the defense and slip the puck past Jordan Pearce on the backhander 17:10 into the period to tie the game at 1-1. The goal from Sirota was his team-leading 17th of the season and his team-leading second shorthanded tally.

Beating the clock to regain the lead to end of the second, Travis Novak (9th) knocked in a Joey Martin rebound with seven-tenths of a second remaining in the period to regain a one goal advantage for Toledo.

Carrying momentum into the third period, Coetzee (20th) gave the Walleye a two-goal cushion with his second goal of the night 26 seconds into the stanza.

Anchored by a pair of power-play goals the K-Wings started to mount a comeback 7:22 into the period with a strike from Wesley Myron (2nd). The goal from Myron extended the rookies point streak to three games.

Less than two minutes later, Sam Ftorek (8th) recorded the equalizer with the slap shot from the point. Ftorek, who leads the team in power-play goals, has scored six of his eight goals this season with a man-advantage.

Completing the comeback 20 seconds into the extra session, Myron found Yann Sauve (4th) for the game-winner. Three of Sauve's four goals this season have come in overtime. The assist by Myron capped off a three-point (1 goal, 2 assists) night for the forward.

Joel Martin (23-19-4-1) recorded 43 saves for his league-best 23rd victory of season.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will begin a four-game week today, Monday, February 18th with a special 2 p.m. encounter on President's Day at the U.S. Bank Arena against the Cincinnati Cyclones. On the season, Kalamazoo is 2-2-0-1 against Cincinnati, who begins the week in first place in the North Division.

The third-leg of the K-Wings five-game road swing will occur on Thursday, February 21st with a 7:05 p.m. start time at the Sovereign Center against the Reading Royals. The K-Wings are 0-2-0-0 against the Royals, who are in first place in the Atlantic Division and own the best-record (34-14-3-3) in the Eastern Conference.

The K-Wings will finish the week with a pair of game at the First Arena on Saturday, February 23rd and Sunday, February 24th against the Elmira Jackals. Saturday's face-off is slated for 7:05 p.m., while the puck will drop Sunday at 4:05 p.m. On the season, Kalamazoo is 1-1-0-0 against Elmira, who starts the week in second place in the Atlantic Division.

Mallet to AHL

Yesterday, forward Alexandre Mallet was reassigned to the Chicago Wolves. The trip to the AHL by Mallet marks the 14th time this season that a member of the K-Wings has been loaned or reassigned to the AHL.

Mr. OT K-Wings defenseman Yann Sauve has a knack for the overtime heroics. Three of Sauve's four goals this season have come in overtime.

Good Things Come in Threes Forwards Aaron Clarke and Wesley Myron are starting to heat up. Both players begin the week on three-game point streaks.

On a Roll

The K-Wings enter the week on a roll. Kalamazoo heads into Cincinnati winning six out of their last eight games.

The Obscure Stat of the Week Kalamazoo has allowed an average of 34.73 shots a game. The nearly 35 shots a game is the second-highest average in the ECHL and the most in the ECHL.
