Condors move to within six points of playoff spot
February 18, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
Buoyed by a three-game winning streak, the Bakersfield Condors have climbed to within six points of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with 39 points on the season.
The Condors swept a two-game series at home against Colorado over the weekend. Bakersfield opened the weekend with a 4-1 win on Friday. Goaltender Brian Stewart keyed the victory, making an ECHL season-high 52 saves. Scott Freeman led the way offensively with three points (1g-2a), while Jake Morley (2a), Nicholas Tremblay (1g-1a) and Evan Trupp (1g-1a) each had two points.
Stewart was the story once again on Saturday, stopping all 46 Colorado shots he faced to record his third career ECHL shutout. Morley notched the only goal the Condors needed, scoring 6:15 into the second period. Bakersfield's penalty kill capped a perfect weekend, killing all seven Colorado power-play opportunities, and keeping the league's number one power-play unit off the board on 10 chances over the two-game series.
Stewart has been in goal for each of the Condors' three wins during their winning streak, making at least 40 saves in each game and stopping 138 of 141 shots (.979 save percentage) in the process.
Fellow goaltender Scott Greenham is second among rookies, and fifth among all goaltenders, with 940 saves, and he has stopped 25 of 26 shootout attempts to rank second in the league with a .962 shootout save percentage.
Francis Verreault has been a key acquisition for Bakersfield, tallying 21 points (7g-14a) in 21 games with the Condors after being picked up in a trade with Greenville.
This week, the Condors visit Las Vegas on Tuesday and host Stockton on Thursday and Ontario on Saturday.
Cincinnati's Foster becomes 11th ECHL goaltender to score goal
Cincinnati's Brian Foster became the 11th goaltender in ECHL history to score a goal when he was the last Cyclone to touch the puck prior to it going into an empty net on a delayed penalty with 30 seconds remaining in the first period of Cincinnati's 2-1 win against Trenton on Friday.
See video of Foster's goal
Foster becomes the first goaltender to score a goal since Bakersfield's Timo Pielmeier on Dec. 19, 2009 against Utah.
Selected in the fifth round (161st overall) by Florida in the 2005 National Hockey League Entry Draft and under NHL contract to the Panthers, Foster is the Cyclones' all-time leader with 45 career wins, and prior to Monday's game against Kalamazoo is 18-6-4 with a 2.58 goals-against average and a save percentage of .910. He made his NHL debut with Florida on Feb. 4, 2012, stopping the only shot he faced in 4:52 of playing time.
Corwin Saurdiff of Hampton Roads was the first ECHL goaltender to score a goal on March 18, 1995 against Charlotte. Charlotte's Nick Vitucci, Erie's Olie Sundstrom and South Carolina's Sean Gauthier all accomplished the feat during the 1995-96 season and Toledo's Mark Bernard scored a goal on March 27, 2001 against Johnstown. Brian Eklund of Pensacola scored at Mississippi on Dec. 5, 2003 and Trevor Koenig of Atlantic City registered a goal at Wheeling on Mar. 2, 2005. Current Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith scored for Lexington against Dayton on Oct. 26, 2002 and current Los Angeles Kings goaltender, and 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Jonathan Quick scored for Reading at Pensacola on Oct. 24, 2007.
